It's going.... |
.... and it's going pretty well. This has been the first full week of my
new job, my first *real* programming job! It's been SO much fun! I was
a little nervous last week because the size of the project is HUGE
(much bigger than anything I've done thus far in my programming
'career'), but I took one small project and have been working away at
it all week, and it's been going very well. The hours fly by without me
even noticing. I get hungry during the day and I don't understand
why... until I notice that lunch was almost 2 hours ago and I haven't
looked at the clock in that entire time. Only thing is, the project I'm
doing isn't anything big... and it's taken me all week to do it!
Granted, I had to go back and fix a bunch of other things to make it
work 'properly' (that, really, I probably didn't have to do, but since
this is my baby now, I kinda want to make it look professional), but
still. Luckily there's a part-time guy here too so he picks up some of
the slack. It is, afterall, still my first full week here.
Probably the most positive posting I've ever had here! Hopefully it
won't be the last. Things in life right now are just so damn good, it's
amazing really. Only thing that would be better is if we had Stanley
Cup playoff hockey right now (I work in the heart of the now infamous
'Red Mile' in Calgary from last years playoff run... it'd be nice to
walk out of work and join a parade). Oh well. Thought I'd post and let
everyone know how things are.
- Shawn.

Well so what. Have to start somewhere. Hope your mgmt has half
a clue. One working-person friend of mine just got a new job
big relief for him and myself. His last boss called him a liar
when he (my friend) said "one cannot install M$ OSen on a Mac."
I am not making this up. Seriously that is what happened.
Because my friend is a big Linux/Free Software advocate the
suitnik thought he was just prejudiced about M$. Well, he
will maintain/etc. it for pay... if that's what he contracted
to do. But he will not install it on a Mac. He won't try
to parachute from the 13th floor of the building either.
About doing stuff and permission, a few quotes:
Adm. Grace Hopper: It is better to beg forgiveness than to
ask permission.
Do it, get it running, get them dependent on it, then
they will have to maintain it and improve it.
Read N. Borenstein (Programming as if people mattered; a good set
of short precepts) Read his counsels on dealing with management.
I decided not to quote it because I might be misunderstood.

Nobody loves a rate-buster. And besides, don't do too much too soon
or when a crunch comes you will be overextended.

Also the job after the first one is much easier to find.
