jane mead. for rosena. |
from "House of Poured-Out Waters" by Jane Mead
Should have begun with the
angel in Central Park
(by Emma Stebbins, circa
1873). Do you know her?--
Feet caught in the
moment before she discovers
her weight, one hand
out for balance, wings
still full of air. Just
some metal made into
wings, just some wings
about to fold in, just
a statue, pigeons on her
head, Mozart on the
tape machine, vacuum
in the place where the
notes rise up (how he
must have suffered) life
from which something
beautiful was made, pen-in-hand
for how I want it, Exsultate,
Jubilate, words from elsewhere
seeping out of the unavailable
background: though the world
destroy this body, yet
in my flesh shall I
see God-- sense of humor
standing for survival
Exsultate standing for
itself and for how
I want to hold it
out in the cup I make
of my bony hands,--
and how the cup won't hold it.

Dear Elegy,
Thank you so much for this gift. I do not know this poet nor Emma Stebbins, but
I now have another book to get.
The images are delicate and strong at the same time eh? I loved it.

my wonderful wonderful creative writing prof in college gave me jane
mead's first book _The Lord and the General Din of the World_ to read
during the independent study i did with her. it was one of those books
that literally changed my life. i'd never heard of her before. my prof
had heard her read but hadn't actually read the book. i went back to
her and said you *have* to read this!! :)
