Journalist writing story on ECT - Needs Help |
Hi there. I am doing some preliminary research for a story on Electro
Convulsive Therapy, and I am trying to make contact with anyone in
Northern California who is considering ECT at this time or has
considered ECT as a treatment in the last four or five years. You can
contact me at saudadede@yahoo.com. Your perspectives would be greatly
appreciated.
Many thanks.
Sincerely,
Jordan

No full name, address or phone # to call? A Yahoo mailbox? You must be
fucking nuts if you think anyone here should contact you. Talk about
potential for trouble.
ASDer's, I'd not respond to this unless he provides some details, on the NG,
as to who he is, what kind of story it is and for whom, credentials,
anything that can be checked on. He may be real, or he could be a predator
looking for someone in a vulnerable state. If he is doing a story, why would
YOU have to be in northern California. Interviews can be done by phone, the
net, etc. Yeah, I can be paranoid, but even paranoids have enemies.....

I appreciate your concerns. They're quite legitimate. Please forgive
me for not being clearer in my previous posting. My name is Jordan
deBree. I am a graduate student in journalism at UC Berkeley, and I
freelance for several publications.
The northern California pre-requisite is because the story I'm doing is
geographically driven. Like a lot of folks, I'm not in the habit of
posting my private phone number on a public site where it can be found
and used (or abused) by anyone. I hope everyone can appreciate that.
I'm in the midst of some preliminary research for a longer magazine
piece looking at ECT - its promise, its failings, its historical
stigma, the patients who seek it out, the medical community's
understanding of its impact, etc... Hopefully, this article will
thoughtfully and with great humanity explore those themes. Obviously,
this is complex territory, and as a journalist who has never undergone
ECT, I need the help of patients, practitioners, researchers, etc to
really begin to understand it.
It's an important story, and any help would be greatly appreciated.
Again, thanks.
Sincerely,
Jordan

Now you're talking! I don't fall into your demographic, but you do sound
legit. If anyone is interested, I'd suggest contacting Mr. deBree, and
getting the name of a supervising professor. Look that person up
independently and confirm credentials and such. Something like this can be
very interesting and helpful to the general public and others with
depression. Anything we can do to make the public understand our plight
better is worth the effort.
