Object: Katie Corcoran - where are you?
Someone I care about very much is a "missing person" and I
wonder if anyone here has ever participated in a search
and/or might be able to offer advice beyond distributing
flyers all over town (which is all I can think of). Her
sister put an ad up on the L.A. pages Craig's list in the
"missed connections" section. Her mom and sister live in
L.A. but Katie's gone missing in Providence, RI so I don't
think the ad will help -- or this post -- but I feel
desperate to do something, anything. Here's the ad with
Katie's pic:
http://losangeles.craigslist.org/lac/mis/417601489.html
One of the things that worries me most is reading in an
article that a "psychiatric history may be involved". I'm
afraid the police won't look as hard if they think she might
have just "flaked off". She was last seen when a cab dropped
her off at a women's shelter but, apparently, she didn't go
in. I answered her sister's ad, hoping to hear from her to
get more details about any organized effort, beyond the
police, to help find her. Suggestions for action are most
welcome. I'm so worried.

Oh Gayle. I'm so sorry to hear this. How devastating this is for all
involved. May I put the link to the ad and photo on my facebook page and
blog in the hope that someone might be able to help? If there is any other
way you think I might be able to help please don't hesitate to ask.

Gayle, this is terrifying, no getting around that.
Women's shelter? Battered women's shelter? That'd be the place to start.

Gayle - any update?

I visited with her mom today and there have been 3
near-certain reports of Katie in Newport, the most recent
one being on Monday. That's when she tried to sell some
jewelry to a guy on the street telling him she was trying to
buy a bus ticket to NYC. The guy recognized her when he
watched the news later and his description of the jewelry
box she was carrying was accurate.
Hearing that (on Tues.), her husband's boss and a local
church began sending hundreds of emails with her pic to
their contacts in NYC and asked them to begin distributing
there. Katie has a cousin living there, too, who has been
going to shelters and soup kitchens near the bus station
where Katie would have arrived. If she left Newport.
Her family was planning to look at footage tonight from the
security webcams at the bus station in Newport from Monday
on. Her mom seemed to have confidence in the efforts of the
police and is very grateful for the efforts and
fast-thinking creativity of people in the community who are
determined to find Katie, i.e. plastering NYC so quickly.
I won't repeat what she said about the hospital's decision
to bundle a mentally ill woman into a cab headed to a
shelter when her family called five times that morning to
find out when they could pick her up. But, it's fair to say
that, imo, there are no worries about any expenses incurred
in the search for Katie.
I didn't ask a lot of questions, just listened to whatever
she felt like saying. She's a strong woman, calm and steady,
even when worried and tired. But I almost lost it when she
spoke about the bus driver who spent some time talking to
Katie on Sun. night. He gave her his sweatshirt because she
was cold. Who says RIPTA has no heart?
This day is almost gone so now I'm hoping with all my heart
that tomorrow will be the day Katie reconnects with a very
large (and growing) community of people who care about her.
Thanks for asking, Amy.

The news stations there have stayed with the story and
that's a big factor, imo, and there are a lot of people out
on the streets circulating her photo and asking questions. I
don't see the Rhode Island stations but I heard that one
station kept her pic up in a little box on the corner of the
screen during an entire newscast. RI is a small state with
small cities and that has probably helped, in terms of being
able to investigate. And, frankly, even though "street
people" come from all parts of society, Katie possibly
sticks out like a sore thumb, not fitting a stereotype of
what folks might think a homeless person looks like. She
doesn't "belong" there. As if anyone does.
But, if she did move on to NYC, that's a whole different
ballgame. Scarier, imo. Phone home, KC!

Thanks very much for your replies. Other people who care
about Katie and I have been trying to get more information
and brainstorm about how to help through much of the day.
Her disappearance does appear to be more related to her
mental state rather than someone having done her harm. The
police are asking that anyone who recognizes her not
approach her directly but to call the police. It sounds like
they believe she's very afraid and will bolt. So sad. Thanks
again for your help.

read her husband had called in over five times to find out about his

(From http://www.beloblog.com/ProJo_Blogs/newsblog/, the _Providence
Journal_ website)
September 12, 2007
$50,000 reward offered for finding Lincoln woman
LINCOLN--Katie Corcoran, the 35-year-old woman missing from Lincoln, was
spotted on Thursday and as recently as Monday in Newport, Lincoln Police
Chief Robert T. Kells said today.
And Corcoran's family is offering a $50,000 reward for information that
leads to finding her.
State and local police put out an alert and photograph last week for
Corcoran, who has a history of psychiatric problems, reported missing
since last Wednesday.
A Rhode Island Public Transportation Authority bus driver reported
spotting her and she was also spotted at a shelter--both times, in Newport.
Last Wednesday, Corcoran was headed to the Crossroads Rhode Island
center at 160 Broad St., in Providence. She was reported to have arrived
at Crossroads but apparently did not enter the building. The police have
said Corcoran was last seen that day entering a cab at Butler Hospital
on Providence's East Side at about 11:30 a.m.
The police said today that Corcoran had some jewelry with her when she
went to Butler Hospital, and it's believed she had been trying to sell it.
The police description last week said she is 5-feet-7 inches tall, about
120 pounds, with brown hair and eyes. She was wearing a long blue dress,
a cream-colored or white sweater and flip-flop sandals and carrying two
white shopping bags.
The Lincoln and Providence police departments, as well as the state
police, are asking anyone who may have been in the Broad Street area at
that time or who thinks they may have seen her since to call the Lincoln
Police at (401) 333-1111, the Rhode Island State Police at (401)
444-1000 or the Providence Police at (401) 272-3121.

Thanks, Nick. I was relieved when I heard that there have

yesterday. I don't think she has the skills to be homeless
and will not be able to truly "disappear". There are a lot
of people looking because it is getting media attention.
Aside from worrying about her safety, I'm haunted by trying
to understand how someone with so many people who care for
her could be as alone as she must have felt when she didn't

Please take care, Nick.

I don't find this last difficult to understand: at bottom, I don't care

I'm deep down the Pit, just on the way up again.

I have no updates to share. The last near-certain sighting
was last Monday. I want to believe that what feels like a
horribly long amount of time that she's been gone means
she's found the skills to get food, safe shelter and warmer
clothes than she was wearing. Come home, Katie.

According to a story in projo.com, she was seen on Thursday at a shelter
in Newport. There are also other reports of her being sighted around
Newport. That's all I can find at this point. I hope this information
would be instrumental in determining her whereabouts soon.

Thanks for the research, Nick. Although the article was
published on Thurs., 9/13, the sighting at the Newport, RI
shelter was on Thurs, 9/6. The last sighting was on Mon.,
9/10 when she tried to sell jewelry to buy a bus ticket to
NYC. There've been tons of people looking in Newport all
last week without any credible reports.
