The M-80. I never have seen one, but they are a firecracker of true
legend. 4 of them are the equivalent of a stick of dynamite, so the
story goes. Did they ever really exist?

The M-80 exists. it was a low-powered training munition in the military
in the early 1900s, from what I've read..
Also known as the "Silver Salute", it became a popular firecracker in
the early to middle part of the century. but outlawed in the 1950s or
1960s when too many people had their fingers and hands blown off.
the M-80 is often said (mistakenly) to be equivalent of a quarter stick
of dynamite.
I think the M-180, is often ( also mistakenly) said to be the
equivalent of a half stick of dynamite.
neither is true.
an M-80 (and even the M-180) contains a SMALL fraction of the explosive
force of even a quarter stick of dynamite.
both the M-80 and M-180 are basicly black-powder. whereas real
dynamite has a completely different chemical composition (TNT?, i'm
not sure) but I know dynamite has *vastly* more power than either an
M-80 or M-180.
don't take that as EXACT infomation, just off the top of my head
because I googled this info a year or two ago. I'm not expert either.
LOL.
p.s. there are also MANY perfectly *legal* (and some illegal)
firecrackers that are called M-80s or have something that say M-80,
but don't even have nearly the power of the real M-80.
if one lit off a REAL quarter or half stick of dynamite, you would
probably not want to be within 2 blocks of the blast.

Dynamite is nitroglycerin stabilized with sawdust of diatomaceous
earth.

A real half stick of dynamite from several feet away is loud and a
kick in the stomach, but not all that bad. I've set them off with a
22, shooting at them. Range of 20 to 30 feet, it's been a while, I
don't remember exactly.

The "Cherry Bomb" - a media favorite, whenever kids blow ***** up they
used a cherry bomb. Similar to my Mom's use of the word "dope" - look
at that guy, he's got to be on dope.
