It may seem callous, but it's like watching someone on a bad acid trip who
thinks he can fly. He's running towards a cliff and you are just too far
away to catch him.
What can you do except look the other way?

If that's what you have to do to take care of your own self then do it. All
of us deal with this stuff in our own way. No judgement from my side of the

None of us are in any position to give him any concrete RL help,
unhappily. His family's dealt with his disorder far more than any of us
ever will, so we have to trust they'll be able to do right by him.

In my defense I'd like to point out that:
1: We were the only two survivors of that ship going down.
2: It was a desert island with few resources.
3: He knew how to use those resources to keep us alive.
4: I only appeared to enjoy it because I was craving protein.
What was I supposed to do? Geez... a bunch of soccer players eat dead

"The Other Window" - Wire (1979)
He took his seat on the foreign train
He thought it pleasant to travel again
Mindful of the journey's end
He read again the letter from his friend
Time passed as it often does
The seat was hard, the carriage fetid
He was dressed for summer, but still he sweated
It was better than being home
Feeling the cold, and living alone
Time passed slowly
Around him people spoke in French
Despite schooldays it made no sense
Occasional stares caught his eye
He was tempted to smile, but
Being shy, time passed
When he looked through the window
For the thousandth time
He saw a black horse fighting for its life
In a barbed wire fence
Fatally tangled
The more it struggled
The more it was strangled
Time sped up
He turned away
There was nothing he could do
The other window
Had a nicer view
Time passed painfully

I can see a situation where it could be helpful. Or rather, less
harmful.
If a person is overwhelmed, frustrated and getting angry, it's better
to bow out. I don't join in in the first place because my stamina for
it is very short, and I don't want anyone to think they can count on
me during these kinds of events. But if I happened to get involved,
then *I* might need support too. And I might need to explain that I
have to back out.
Don't know if this is the case right now or not. Just theorizing.

I guess I just don't want to watch what seems like a lot of enabling. The

Well, sometimes it is good etiquette to announce why one is
not participating in any given forum or thread, or even an
imminent killfile. Personally I take it as given that no one
here is obligated to read a post, reply, etc. etc. So w. is right

Yes, but there is always a stream and switching them in mid-stride just

Not by his outward guise is a man well known.
In fleeting glance let none place confidence.

It may seem callous, but it's like watching someone on a bad acid trip who

What can you do except look the other way?

Stand in the way.

You are dreaming if you think the words of anybody here are going to stand
in the way of his vivid hallucinations.

and how on earth does one stand in the way here on asd? I'm in
California, Bev's in Canada, Grace is in Australia.... none of us can
do a damn thing to "stand in the way".

Where is Noon Cat Nick?

Present.

The 'acid trip' is figurative, the 'cliff' is figurative, the 'catching' is
figurative, even the 'looking the other way' is figurative.

Why do you then decide that the 'standing' must be literal?

Context is everything.

Yes. But you know sometimes words - and phrases - have two meanings, and
both might be valid in a given context.

even figuratively what the hell does "stand in the way" mean??

You mean you weren't just being stupid and taking the words in an
absurdly literal way? Makes you wonder why anyone would treat you as if
you had been, doesn't it?
