La. drawls confuse cop communications (ot) |

"SHREVEPORT, La. -- Southern drawls have thwarted voice recognition
equipment used by the Shreveport Police Department to route non-emergency
calls. "
[...]
"The voice-recognition system asked people to name the person or department
they wanted. More often than not, the system just didn't understand, and
they wound up at the wrong place, said Capt. John Dunn, who oversees police
communications."

I heard this story on the radio. They played a demonstration --
someone called the police department and said the name of the person
they wanted to talk to. The voice mail system gave them 3
opportunities to repeat the name and got it wrong every time. Finally
the caller was turned over to a human being :)

It sounds like an expensive way of having to employ the same number of
people in the end. The last I heard, you need to teach voice recognition
software the voice of its user. How many people live in Louisiana?

The opinions given above may be mine. They might also
just be what I feel like saying right now, okay?
