I recently bought a Toshiba, I think 'satellite' model with that criteria in
mind. It was about a grand. It's been working really well.

they worked pretty well, iirc. i also had good experiences with ibm

my first laptop was a thinkpad and i loved it until the day i
accidentally blew it up, but i don't like that you now have to send
them back to ibm to get any repairs done. my sister had problems with
hers and took it to the local repair guys who are really good and
really reasonably priced (it was no longer under warrenty). they
couldn't do anything for her because they couldn't get parts for it.

Rose, Deeia, Tessa, and Erin all use Thinkpads as their personal
machines...I think they scored more than a dozen, just-in-case
there are only two standard boxes - - one connects to their main
ISP via a circuituous route to Bellingham, and piggybacks a VPN
from another box to //Mercury here; uses WiFi in the compound
no matter what, they have secured connectivity, always...

on the other hand, you're probably less likely to need repairs (unless
you abuse your thinkpad) than with most other brands. none of my
thinkpads has ever needed repairs. now i have an ibm desktop pc at home,
which has also worked perfectly so far.
the toshibas i used at work did need to be repaired occasionally.

I read the entire thread and no one mentions the HP laptops. Desktopwise I
think they are very goood, altough the drives (CD's, DVD's, floppy) tend to
perform in a lousy way after some time. Never tested an HP laptop.
My Toshiba laptop is performing very good. It has rescued me sometimes by
doing some tasks which the desktops refuse to do. I find it very reliable.
Altough it is not what you can say a recent purchase. It is only 900 MHz. I
must say, though that in one occassion the display broke into pieces in a
misterious way. It was on a chair and last time I saw before I found the
display broken, was OK. I could never explain myself how the damn thing
broke. (those are crystals. And there is a phenomenon called "dislocation",
where a little fracture grows and grows until the entire crystal goes to
pieces. Maybe that's what happened).
I had a Compaq with a thinkpad which was way superior than the one of the
toshiba. Never has any complaints about it. But that was really a long tme
ago (about 6 years ago). Now it's an HP business, and I do not know about
the new generation of them.

There's only about 7 laptop makers in the world. They build machines for
companies such as Dell, HP, Apple...to their specs. I've found that the
nicest machines (aside from Apple notebooks) are the Asus barebones
laptops. Any number of computer shops can buy these chassis systems and
configure it exactly how you want.
The ones we build are about the same price as the Dell Inspiron line
(which we repair WAY too many of) and have exceptional build quality.
We sell a lot of these:

We put in four, two were DOA. ASUS has no credit card
exchange except on their server boards, so you have to RMA,
then wait for the new board. A co worker has one, but one
of the ram slots is dead. I think they have QC issues, but
it could just be bad luck.

FYI on the Dell thing. I've had a couple of Dell laptops... not
because I like them but because work buys them for me. I am VERY hard
on my laptops, and I've never really had any problems related to the
fact that I routinely drop them, bang them around, and otherwise abuse
them. I destroyed a Sager that way (terrific machine otherwise).
I am not a fan of Dell. The first one I had was a total lemon; there
were problems ALL the time, and they couldn't be fixed without ending
it off, and I can't be without my laptop. And I think that they
really had to do with design, so I'm not sure if they could have been
fixed anyway. This one, which is a Latitude, is ok. It's slow, now,
and I'd like another, but I have no real complaints.
Here is the seriously good thing about Dell, though. Two years ago, I
was in Maine, and my motherboard blew up. They sent someone out to
the little island I was on and fixed it. 24 hours, no charge.
However, I would buy something else if I were buying it for myself.
Probably a Gateway. Like Dells, you either love or hate Gateways, and
I love them. I think that Franz's idea about a bare bones system is a
good one, though. I've done that before, but sometimes there are
support issues.

good one, though. I've done that before, but sometimes there are
support issues.
i have a gateway now. i don't really feel strongly one way or the
other about it, to be honest. it works. somehow i broke the floppy
drive that it won't let go of disks without a big fight but for as
often as i use floppies, who cares?
my desktop is a dell but i haven't used it hard enough to really know
how well it performs. i never should have bought that computer. it's
nice, just not what i wanted. and i knew it wasn't what i wanted when
i bought it instead of another laptop, but i bought it anyway. and
then six months later i bought the slow, used laptop. heh.

even a slow used laptop can run Traveler
and be used to play MP3s and DivX stuff

There's only about 7 laptop makers in the world. They build machines for
companies such as Dell, HP, Apple...to their specs. I've found that the
nicest machines (aside from Apple notebooks) are the Asus barebones
laptops. Any number of computer shops can buy these chassis systems and
configure it exactly how you want.
The ones we build are about the same price as the Dell Inspiron line
(which we repair WAY too many of) and have exceptional build quality.
We sell a lot of these:

i've heard a lot of people have problems with dells.
i'm kind of thinking about an ibook but the pc --> mac jump
intimidates me.

My Compaq has served us well, but it's age is starting to show.
The switch to Apple is not that hard, as Macs are very friendly to PC files,
etc. and compatibility for things like Office is not an issue at all. That
said, make sure that there is no software that you use (and must have) that
only has a PC version.
As for problems by by brands, I'd look at Consumer Reports for some guidance
(www.consumerreports.org). Often it is a particular model that is a
problem, and not an entire brand.

i don't know why i have this burning desire for a mac. i don't really
use that much exciting software and nothing that i am die-hard
attached to and couldn't change.

if you don't really need a portable pc, you can save a lot by getting a
desktop pc instead of a laptop...
