Actually, it's from Persian: "shah mat" - the king is dead. (Russian
borrowed it, and chess in Russian is "shakhmati".)

I think it's "check and mate" really. When I was a kid, we'd play that
anytime you put the king in check, you punched the person.

yeah, then the other person accidentally pushes the board off the table and
says "oh no, just when i was winning."
i think checkmate is one word. it comes from german, schachmatt, and it
probably goes all the way back to some ancient persian word like shahmat.
shah meaning king as in the shah of iran, and mat probably meaning dead or
captured or something.
