Some of the guitar solos from the 60's make me cringe.

Even Hendrix. A lot of his stuff is pretty crap, especially compared
to more recent players like EVH, Yngwie Malmsteen, Satriani, Vai,
Gambale and the shredder's shredder, Zakk Wylde. And don't forget
Randy Rhodes and Dimebag, RIP.
Of course you have to add Jimmy Page, Peter Green, Angus Young, Gary
Moore, and the grand-daddy of heavy metal, Tommy Iommi, into the mix.
And about a thousand others...

Remember "Free Form Guitar" from Chicago's first album? There was
nothing so earsplitting ever committed to vinyl up to that time. Then
Lou Reed topped it with _Metal Machine Music_, guaranteed to clear any
room of non-hearing-impaired creatures in record time.

Unfortunately, yes, I still do. Wasn't that guitarist the idiot who
blew his brains out playing "ha ha, watch me pretend to shoot myself in
the head" with an "unloaded" gun?

I don't remember it so much as earsplitting as boring. A lot of low
volume humming and crackling between bursts of him scrubbing his
fingers up and down the fretboard. It sucked! And that title, Jesus!
Then Lou Reed topped it with _Metal Machine Music_, guaranteed to
clear any room of non-hearing-impaired creatures in record time.
Now available at the iTunes Store! The curious can listen to previews:

Some of the comments are pretty funny; ""It's very good. Britney Spears
covered side 3 but she didn't even know who it was by. This record
continues to be an influence on popular music!"
