Looked at finches, canaries, and lizards |
I went to the pet shop to take a look at some potential pets. There were
some lizards, but I looked more closely at the birds.
I know what I want now: a couple of zebra finches. It was quite interesting
and calming to watch these little birds move around, chirping happily. And
even after I stood right next to the cage for a while, I could not detect
any irritating smell, and I had no allergic reaction. With a couple of zebra
finches chirping in my living room, I won't feel as lonely. At least there
will be a couple of living creatures in my home besides me (and the dust
mites, ants etc.).
I'm still thinking about names. I don't want to call them "Birdbert",
"Finchbert", or "Zebrabert". :)

I have always liked finches and I agree, they will give you some company and
at the same time not stink up the place. Why not call them bird-1 and
bird-2? I hope you enjoy them!

Bird-1 and Bird-2? Ok. Thanks for the suggestion.
Without knowing their genders, one has to give them gender-neutral names
like "Terry" and "Chris". If one is bigger than the other, I could call them
"Smallie" and "Biggie". Or if one is darker, they could be "Lightie" and
"Darkie".

I'm glad you are getting two; one bird all alone is not a happy bird at all
so if you aren't going to be there pretty much all the time, they do need
other company.

Yes, I've heard that is true for zebra finches, although canaries are said
to be happy to be alone.

Mine weren't. Canaries are very sociable and spend a lot of time
'talking' to each other, in my experience.
