Object: Looking for the geeks again
I would be delighted if my default OS was Mandrake (what do you say
Whiskers?). But I have four computers where I have installed the OS on and
in three of these there is one problem, one in each. I will post the three
problems separately not to make a mess out of it.
Now let's call the machines compute1, computer2 and computer3.
I cannot set wireless Internet in computer1. Now computer2 which uses the
same wireless adapter than computer1 (SMC2662W) has Internet and works just
fine. Neither machine lists the adapter in Harddrake. The protocol in
the machine where the adapter works is wlan(0). If I go to Mandrake Control
Centre (Configure your Computer) and I select "Manage Connections" it
doesn't give the driver the connection is using.. Just to make it clear, the
adapter SMC2662W is an USB adapter, and I am using Mandrake 10.1.
Now, I had a look in /var/log/messages in computer 2 to find out what driver
it is using. It turns out it's the Atmel at76c503a. There in one of the set
in Mandrake but it refuses to take it. Now I downloaded the binaries and the
problem is now that I cannot compile the bloody driver. You just have to
type "make" and "make install" to install it, but when I "make" I get a
bunch of errors. Now computer1 has an HT processor, and I suspect it all
have to do with hyperthreading and the two virtual processors despite the
driver's authors claim they have taken care of that. I am trying with the
Berlios driver not the Sourceforge.
Any ideas?

I followed your advise and I get the message: "do not be stupid, I am Linux,
not DOS, besides the syntax is all wrong". Now what should I do, geek?

What are the messages you get when you try to 'make'? Usually they refer to
files that are required but you haven't got on that machine.
If you have different CPUs on the machines then you'll have different
'kernels', and so the 'source' and 'library' files needed to compile
packages from source, will also be different.
USB is not really designed for 'communications', so USB 'modems' and 'NICs'
etc can be a problem. The laptop I'm using at the moment cannot detect the
modem I'm using, only the USB/Serial adaptor, but the modem works OK as
long as I work out what 'port' to tell Mandrake to use for the modem.
(It's a real modem, so no 'driver' is needed, which is why I bought it). If
you can identify the port used by the adaptor, that may well be the port
Mandrake can use for the wireless device.
I've never use a 'wireless' device so I won't be much help with that.

Have you made sure that your system has all the files or packages listed in
the "requires:" data for the source-package you are trying to install?
There seems to be something about "USB" that's missing, for a start; have
you got any other USB gadgets working in that machine? Does 'configure
your computer' list any USB controllers or USB ports under 'Hardware'?
(I'm struggling here, if you hadn't noticed).

problem is now that I cannot compile the bloody driver. You just have to
type "make" and "make install" to install it, but when I "make" I get a
bunch of errors.

What kind of errors?

Now computer1 has an HT processor, and I suspect it all have to do
with hyperthreading and the two virtual processors despite the
driver's authors claim they have taken care of that. I am trying with
the Berlios driver not the Sourceforge.

Can you turn off hyper-threading? Then do make clean && make depends &&
make && make install and see what happens. Maybe do them one at a time.

I did. Are you sure you have all the files or have them all matched?
