y do we (i) seek it?
I don't know sweetheart. I honestly don't know. Maybe because feeling
anything is better than feeling nothing at all.

love doesn't hurt. the but hurts.
as in, "i love you, but." or, "s/he loves me, but."
it's a pain in the but, is what it is.
a hurt like HELL in the but.
"love stinks"? no.
the but stinks.
to make love work, all you have to do is
(ready? cue the chorus line)
wipe that but,
scratch that but, and
kick that but around the block.
"and seek not to guide the course of love,
for love, when it finds you worthy,
will guide your course."
-- khalil gibran
"and hold the pickle."
-- cal el cabron
"hey baba louie, are you all right?"
-- el kabong
"s'arite."

Because of the times when it doesn't hurt, when it fits like a
comfortable sweater, wrapping us in warm arms, making us feel good and
safe and truly like ourselves. Because it's a tough life, and even
tougher when we have to face it alone. Because it brings out the very
best in us when it's working right. Because it's like water to a
thirsty plant. Because we are often at our very best when we love and
are loved.
I'm 50 and still seeking it. I'll seek it for the rest of my life.
Because even when love was at its worse, it still made me feel truly
and fully alive. Because I feel bereft without it, lost and terribly
alone.

i ask myself, why do i keep hurting myself over things that're gone?
it hurts like hell.
many of us keep going back to things that bring us pain. for some
its a boyfriend or girlfriend. for others, it's family that we loved.
i don't understand it all. all i know is, it hurts.

Love hurts,
Love scars,
Love wounds
and mars.
Any heart not tough
Or strong enough
Takes a lot of pain
Takes a lot of pain
Love is like a cloud,
holds a lot of rain.
Love hurts,
Love hurts.
I may be slow,
But even so,
I know a thing or two,
I learned from you.
I really learned a lot,
I really learned a lot,
Love is like a flame,
Burns you when it's hot.
Love hurts,
Love hurts.
Some fools read of happiness,
Blissfulness, togetherness.
Some fools fool themselves I guess,
but they're not fooling me.
Well I know it isn't true
I know it isn't true,
I know it isn't true;
Love is just a lie,
Meant to make you blue.
Love hurts,
Love hurts,
Love hurts.
[Instrumental break]
I know it isn't true,
I know it isn't true;
Love is just a lie,
Meant to make you blue.
Love hurts,
Love hurts,
Love hurts,
Love hurts.
(Based on my hearing of the Joan Jett version.)

i love joan jett. i have one of her picks. she threw it into the
audience and my son caught it. he gave it to me cuz he knew i prized
it more than he.
thru my years of pondering unconditional love (and always being
rebuked by you, alan...) i have finally caved in. all the people left
in my life have put conditions on their love for me. there is no
unconditional love left for me.
i'm so tired of all the conditions.
i give up.
i love, i hurt.

Maybe there are people who fall in love and it lasts for the rest of
their lives, but I'll bet it's few indeed. Perhaps the lyric is too
cynical, but I think it's closer to what goes on than most love songs
are.
Actually, I won't bet - it's just a figure of speech. I don't gamble.
It's good to have a vice kept in reserve for a rainy day.
