Low expectations - good or bad? |
I don't expect my life to improve. I don't expect good things to happen to
me.
This may be good, because I won't be disappointed.
This may be bad, because it may be a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Mathematical definition of 'expectation' from http://dictionary.reference.com/
'The sum of the values of a random variable divided by the number of values.'
I think that means don't take expectations too seriously?

That sounds pretty good. Those things that hurt won't hurt so much
(because they are expected) AND it means you get more "pleasant" out
of "pleasant surprises" (as they will lie in the realm of the
unexpected, and that is always exciting.)
This may be bad, because it may be a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Personally, I feel people have so little control over the world around
them and the actions of others that I would not worry about
self-fulfilling prophecies.
However, if you DO believe in self-fulfilling prophecies, then why
make them of a negative slant? You may as well expect good things to
happen and have THOSE be self-fulfilled.
The way I see it, your messsage presents a win-win situation.

I would say it's bad because it fails to consider that you shape your own
destiny to some extent. Of course, there is good and bad luck, but creating
goals and working to fulfill them can help success. For example, if you wanted
to tour Europe, saving money and checking travel itineraires would help, if you
didn't say you wouldn't be likely to go. So I would give it a shot, create
some goals and try to achieve them.
