Major 10 year anniversary #2 |
Oldbies might remember my horror story about Saint Elizabeth's Hospital
in Boston and the treatment I received in their ER. That happened 10
years ago today.
Isabelle Selassie, may you rot in Hell. I see you were fired from UHS
last year, curiously enough on my birthday. You cried "racism", claiming
it was because they didn't like a "strong black woman"; I suspect there
were other factors. No idea how the lawsuit played out, but I hope to
God you lost and are no longer practicing medicine anywhere.

Thanks for asking. I posted world's shortest recap in another thread, but
the gist is that life could be better-- can't it always?-- but it could also
be much, much worse. If you ask my cats, they'd say pretty much the same
thing. :-)

I remember your posts about it, but it was about 9 months before I joined
ASD. Sorry there has to be a anniversary to such events, but Karma came
around and she wont be there to torture anyone else.

Thanks, Jane. Google shows a number of articles about her filing the
lawsuit but nothing about her winning it. However, she is apparently no
longer affiliated with United Health Services or Binghamton General
Hospital, where she was Director of their Psychiatric Evaluation
Program, and I can't find anything else about her. Hopefully she's found
a new career that involves asking, "Would you like fries with that?"

Couldn't find anything on her case in Westlaw. Though that doesn't
necessarily mean anything.

Westlaw is a service that publishes written opinions in cases. If a case is
routine, and there's no occasion in it for a judge to render an opinion on a
motion, and there's no appeal, or if it settles before any such node has
been reached, Westlaw won't have anything about it.
There's nothing in Westlaw on the OJ case, for example, except for a
decision adverse to the grandparents on their appeal of a judgment
terminating their guardianship of the Simpson children.

What's Westlaw? Man I hope they didn't settle out of court to shut her
up. Apparently there were picketeers and everything, protesting her
dismissal outside the hospital.
It's weird... the other doctor I was involved with during that whole
episode, the guy who let me out of the lockup the next morning and gave
me advice on how not to inadvertently set off "suicide risk" alarms that
could get me locked up again, has apparently had his license suspended
in Massachusetts. No idea why. I like to think it was because he a bit
too much of a patient advocate for the hospital administration to put up
with, but that doesn't get you suspended, it gets you fired.
After all that, the restraint and forced drugging and lockup and all, I
was so paranoid about it happening again I wouldn't say *anything* to
this other shrink (not the guy mentioned above) without wrapping it in
yards of boilerplate disclaimers about how what I was saying should not
be taken to indicate that I was a risk to myself or others, past
performance is no guarantee of future results, blah blah blah. He
finally told me I could knock it off, he got the idea, I had suicidal
thoughts but wasn't going to act on them.
He was really pissed when I eventually *did* try to kill myself after
not talking about it with him. I told him I didn't think it would make
much of a difference to him, I'm just part of a job. He told me, listen,
you have NO IDEA what effect it would have on me if you had killed
yourself. He was pissed because he cared. I was stunned. He was a nice
guy, and a good doctor. Hope *he's* still practicing.

Thanks for letting me know, Grace. Many people here (with one notable
exception) have been very supportive of me over the years regarding the
incident, particularly when I was on my letter-writing binge to the
hospital, the Mass Board of Medicine, etc. It helped.
