Making fun of the Mentally Ill on IDOL SHOW |
I think the decision to showcase people who are obviously mentally ill (thru
little fault of the participants)especially on Mondays show, illustrates a
very bad choice of production values . American Idol has now lowered
themselves to showcase people who are borderline or more likely
schizophrenic (shizo like illness) in trying to attract viewers. As someone
who has been around these people , its an extremely sad condition that
devastates these peoples lives and families around them. I have a hard time
believing that the producers didn't realize that these participants should
be shown compassion instead of made fun of. This is totally unacceptable

The mentally ill are taken advantage of all the time, by religions all over
the world.
You just don't hear the preachers laughing, they do it out of the mentally
ill people's sight.
Religion was created for people who have a diminished capacity to enlighten
their self.

Ps I think there is a great difference between different forms of mental
illness,Schizophrenia is sometimes a devastating illness that completely
wrecks peoples ability to reason . I am almost sure that the girl who became
very mean out of no where on that show, was schizo affected. I didn't think
this was funny at all.

Pss they just did a interview with heron fox and guess what , even though
she came across much more resonable , I still think she has the S word. I
knew two people in college before their illness caught hold and while I
can't be sure ( who can) the things I saw on the show are enough cause for
be to suspect this gal has begun the sad transformation into this disease.
I think in one way Idol knew this thus they showcases her home and tried to
be nice ( not the judges) and this interview just on. Many of these people
by the way deny they are sick and so they are dependent on people such as
us to protect them , not showcase their worse moments! Pease and love
everyone.

This thread is completely ridiculous. Mainly because no one here
knows whether or not anyone who got showcased even has a mental
illness... so to make an assumption that American Idol is bad because
it makes fun of mental disorders is RETARDED.
Also, just because someone has a freak out, gets mad for no good
reason, doesn't mean they are mentally ill with a disease. Yeah, some
people might have anger management issues, some might have depression,
hell I've had dpression for a long time...... does that mean if
someone is diagnosed on paper with ANYTHING that they are never to be
shown in the outside world because you perceive that people are
laughing at them? Give me a break! People go to American Idol for
the very purpose of being judged. Not judged as people, but judged on
their singing and performance ability. But then people like you take
it too far and think that just because someone has a bad performance,
it means they are bad people. These people with so called mental
illnesses have the same opportunities to audition as everyone else.
If they have a bad performance, yeah, it's funny. If they freak out
and get mad for no reason, yeah, it's inappropriate, and unnaceptable
so of course people are going to respond negatively towards them.
That's what happens in the world. If you are a bitter person and
freak out on people, no one is going to like you. Have some control.
So what's next, anyone who is shy can't be shown on American Idol
because shyness is a disorder that can be written on paper too. Don't
show me on tv because I have social anxiety and don't want people to
look at me. DON'T AUDITION THEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Also, you ASSUME that people are laughing. Maybe some are, but some
aren't. I'm sure some people were laughing hysterically at Renaldo
Lapuz, like me.... but I also like him a whole lot. So yeah, some
people might laugh at certain contestants, but I bet a lot of other
people agree with them or sympathize with them. So what should be the
policy? No one can be showcased on American Idol unless everyone
loves them, no one laughs or has anything negative to say?
Also, so what if some people laugh and scorn? Do you really think
everyone loved Clay Aitken? You think no one was laughing at him or
making fun of him? In life, sometimes people take some criticism.

sorry I am in a hurry. Its sad that I can't adequately transfer what I have
seen in my life to successfully convince you of my opinion. about this
girl. There is an outside chance I am wrong. Its sad that I can't expect
people to feel other peoples pain on a number of issues and thats
depressing and a commentary on todays world. I am not talking just about
the pain this girl and family will experience in the future, I am talking
about the pain from Dr. Phil judgements made daily about people . Albert
Einstein once said, Not everything that can be counted counts, and not

I don't recall any of the contestants as saying they were diagnosed
with any mental illness. And I'm sure the screeners and producers
aren't qualified to make that diagnosis. Additionally not all people
who have "mannerisms" like talking under their breath before singing
are schizophrenic. Many of the people who were showcased were
encouraged by family and friends to audition, if they are mentally ill
wouldn't that mean that the same family/friends are guilty of setting
up the person?

Hi
I didn't mean all , did I say all? I think there were one or two that showed
obvious cases of disorder. I think the screeners do know of the
possibilities and decided to use the contestant anyway. The girl from
Allentown was such an example.
Look I knew people like her and are in group homes . The slow progression
from sanity to paranoid behavior often starts at the exact age when they
become yg adults. To have this documented for the world to see without
qualifiying those effects is gut wrenching. Many parents go thru the stages
thinking their kids are just going thru rebellion. What you saw with that
gal from Allentown is mom just not aware of what was going on yet. It was
extremely sad.

You can't possibly make such a diagnosis from by osmosis. You're
tilting at windmills, without even a viable basis for it.

I do have some background in these disorders; there were a couple who
weren't obvious "initially" but after the audition I could see they
were "not quite right" Especially the Allentown girl; the reaction
was extremely out of proportion to the review she received (Simon was
particularly "nice" to her). The other one who was "off" but not
necessarily mentally disordered (maybe a little personality disorder,
however) was the Star Wars girl. Again, an overreaction to a perceived
slight by the judges. Who knows, maybe after the show airs the
families will see the behavior of their kids and seek help for them?

Well I agree that some of these kids don't seem quite right in the head,
but on the other hand, it may look like an overreaction to us viewers, but I'm
imagining all the adrenaline, all the hopes, all the fatigue from waiting in line
for hours and hours, and then the big nerve-wracking moment of the audition, then
the pin in the balloon. I think alot of the kids' reactions (not all!!) are
normal given the circumstances. The Star Wars girl didn't seem crazy, just really
disappointed and doing a whole "sour grapes" thing. I'm sure she's been reminded
her whole life that she's not as classically pretty as some other girls, so missed
out on some of the fun the pretty girls get to have, so she was sad and hurt that
she didn't get through and blamed her failure on society's love of beauty rather
than on her less than great singing and the fact that she showed up in a costume
which was a really bad idea. Considering all they go through to get there, I think
most of the "anger" reactions are mainly embarrassment and huge disappointment but
people often show that as anger initially. Little kids do it all the time when
they're told "no".

you saw with that gal from Allentown is mom just not aware of what was
going on yet. It was extremely sad.
It's just a dumb girl doing dumb things.
I don't think so, trust me . if your wrong and I think you are, for people
to treat her bad because they will judge her behavior the same way they
would judge our behavior is very bad and unfair. Sorry I disagree with ya.
Nothing wrong with disagreement. I just think you can't make an accurate
psychological diagnosis from 5 minutes of video on a show that shows
only the most outrageous 5 minutes of video.

I don't recall any of the contestants as saying they were diagnosed

I didn't mean all , did I say all? I think there were one or two that

possibilities and decided to use the contestant anyway. The girl from
Allentown was such an example.
Nah. She was on Fox News in NYC last night. She said she got a call from
some supporters who wanted to meet her so she jumped on the train and
went to Manhattan. While she was being interviewed on the street, she
grabbed the microphone and started singing. Some people were into it and
others looked at her like she was ill. She said she doesn't care about

and I think some on Idol knew or suspected the reactions didn't mesh with
reasonable expectations but chose to keep the piece on anyway. Is it
possible she is fine anyway? I guess, but not probable..Basically its sad to

You need to remember: It's not all about you or your life experience.
I didn't see people who were obviously mentally ill - I just saw
people with odd idiosyncracies.
All of the people who you saw totally agreed to be on TV - their
families and/or loved ones were with them and supported them - get
over it. They were ALL there for their short burst of "fame" (read
"TV time").

Hi , This is the last post on this subject.
I am not a professional and what I said about what happened is only my
opinion based on my experiences with people with schizophrenia.
Should people be treated with respect and are often put down in society
anyway and not treated equally ? Absolutely but many so called normal people
can get past that part and take care of themselves anyway. That doesn't make
what others do to kids in school as in bullying or discriminating against
others solely because they are different right, thats for sure. Sometimes so
called normal people can't get past that putdown and the people who do it to
others know that and they think thats cool. Go figure..

We already vote the mentally ill into office so what's the big deal
about watching them on TV?
I think we should have a mentally ill cable tv station. Nothing but
mentally ill people 24/7/365. It would be awesome!

seriously it can be said all people are nuts
But in the case of schizophrenia, its often to the point where they can't
take care of themselves and they constantly show signs of that inability.
Suffice to say the people they showcased Monday would not have been elected
or gotten to be showcased on E!.

American Idol is a worthless waste of tv. I wont waste my time
watching that piece of ***** show. On the other hand, mentally ill
people are always a box of laughs. Look at president Bush. He's
mentally ill and he's pretty funny to watch, especially when one is on
some good drugs. People laugh at me all the time, and I just laugh
back knowing they are more deranged than me.
I'd like to get on American Idol just long enough to beat the ***** out
of ***** Simon. I hate that rude *****. He should be hung
from a rope by his ***** and balls, slowly tortured, then killed.

Hi
Mentally ill are sometimes funny but this show probably will make it much
harder for these people to be accepted. Someone might see her or them and be
criticized for being mean , when in fact they need totally more
understanding. I cringe to think about the negative feedback they will get.
Many in the audience think these people are able to know what they are doing
and not sick thats what is sad.. These people were not able to think
logically and need protection and understanding and not more negativity in
their lives after this.

The problem with American Idol is there is not enough bloodshed.
There have been many cases where a knife stabbing was in order, and
maybe even a shooting. If there was more violence the ratings would
go up.

you dont waste your time watching that "piece of *****" show but you waste
your time posting in the AI newsgroup telling everyone you dont watch the
show then you come off sounding like a high school bully talking about how
you want to beat simon up, dude, turn the computer off, finish your
homework, kiss your mom good night and go to bed.
