MAOI question |
Hi everyone!
Just a quick question for anyone taking an MAOI, or who has taken one in the
past. (Lisa in Mass were you taking one at one stage?)
What kind of side effects do you get if you accidently eat something that
disagrees with the medication? What does it feel like?
I ask because I'm taking moclobimide, a RIMA (reversible MAOI - I don't know
if it's available in the US) and I'm getting some weird side effects such as
sudden extreme tiredness, usually at the same times each day and thought
this could be a factor. I've also been diagnosed with mild epilepy in the
past year and I believe the medication and it's side effects could be at
least partly responsible.
I would appreciate any info people have to offer or any links to point me in
the right direction.
I try to stick my head in on a regular basis, and it's good (but not good,
if you know what I mean) to see familiar faces still here.

What time of day are you taking it? It may be helpful to take it in
the evenings.

i know that tiredness all too well. if you eat what you
shouldn't, you'll get a headache that feels like it's going to
kill you, literally. i get tired once, sometimes twice, a day.
mostly at the same time(s). alan has posted about needing 2
naps a day, though i don't know if that's med-related. it
seems to be a side-effect of the med.
sorry i don't know any links for this, just what i've
experienced and heard.
nice to see you again!

Since RIMAs inhibit predominantly only MAO type A, they appear not to be
susceptible to the same diet-related hypertensive reactions as are
MAOIs; just don't overload on tyramine-rich foods and you'll be okay. If
a hypertensive crisis occurs, the first sign will be an occipital
headache, which feels like the back of your skull is about to explode (I
speak from experience).
Fatigue is a possible side effect of moclobimide. The drug can also
cause hyponatraemia, i.e., lowered blood sodium levels, but the effects
of that would be more noticeable and alarming.
The only other things I can think of are SAD and CFS, which might cause
the fatigue you describe, and which certainly can and do coexist with
depression. Ask your pdoc.
And no, RIMAs have never been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
HTH.

the "sudden extreme tiredness" has always been a problem for me on MAOI's.
it's that sudden feeling that if you don't lie down and close your eyes
within the next 5 minutes, you will surely collapse. it usually hits me
about 2 or 3 in the afternoon, a few hours after my 2nd dose of the day.
good luck lil mouse,
