I dont know if I am suffering from Depression or Grief... is there any
line
drawn between these two?
my pdoc put it rather simply. 'Depression' (as opposed to feeling
depressed)
is long term glumness. i.e., over years rather than weeks or even months.
It
was on that basis that i was diagnosed, anyway. That, and ppl phobias plus
motivation prob.. This is one 'definition' and a rather simplistic one at
that. You certainly don't have to wait a long period of time for a pattern
to emerge or anything like that to get a diagnosis. This is from the web:
Criteria for a major depressive episode.
A person must exhibit either of the following almost daily for at least a
two week period.
1. A persistent sad or depressed mood.
YES
2. Markedly diminished interest or pleasure in usually pleasurable
activities.
YES
3. Plus at least any four of the following:
Significant weight loss or, atypically, weight gain.
Lost 4kg in three weeks
Insomnia, hypersomnia, or early morning awakening.
YES. Often wake up at 3-4 in the morning sweating profusely and cant go back
to sleep.
Psychomotor agitation or retardation.
Decreased energy or fatigue.
DEFINITELY
Feelings of hopelessness, guilt, worthlessness or helplessness.
Really feeling down on the way to work and during the working day
Difficulty thinking, concentrating, remembering or making decisions.
YES
Recurrent thoughts of death, suicidalidation, a suicide attempt, or a
specific plan for suicide.
Fortunately not as strong an urge that I did have a few days ago... I just
wanted to be dead
