movies you haven't seen yet? |
Next week I'm getting Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. I've
heard/read a lot about it. Think I'm in for An Experience. Comments?
How about you? I'm catching up on a few years' worth of stuff.

One of the best movies ever made. I know one of the people involved in that
story too. One of the detectives, the movie being based on a true story.
If you like Kevin Spacey also watch the Life of David Gale. Amazing movie.

I have a bundle of Italian films to watch, back to the 1940s. I'm even
going to Italian classes to help understand them without having to
distract myself with subtitles. Besides, I have one that only has French
subtitles, and I've forgotten most of the French I once knew.

after seeing a bit about it on "the Tourist", i had to get the book. it
was great. i was going to get the movie but it didn't get very good
reviews and, if I remember, the story was changed. when i read that, i
didn't want to see the movie, i didn't want it to spoil the book.

Good movie. The book is better but the movie does it justice.
Anything Kevin Spacey does seems to have quality written all over
it. Watch out for the Voodoo Woman!

Why not try your library first? If you must order it, why not try
Powell's rather than Amazon?
It's good to support the independents...and it's a union (IWW) shop:

Powell's! The best bookstore in the US!
People from Seattle plan day trips to Portland just to go to Powell's.

It certainly is!!! I love Powell's... It's the largest bookstore in
the U.S., takes up the whole block... I spend hours at a time in
bookstores and/or libraries almost every day, and being in Powell's was
heaven for me... I've ordered a number of books that they have shipped
to me in CT...

I'm not suprised, I sometimes want to fly across the country

Amazon rocks! i often buy at Borders though. so i can browse the books.
but a $40 book at Borders is often $26 at Amazon.
i like Borders because of the maths section. i guess Barnes and Noble is
ok. the coffee at B&N is very good. have you been there?

Uh, a book that was available only used from Amazon and priced at $40,
I got from Powell's for--get this--$8, and that was because I wanted a
copy slightly better than the available $7 copy.
Uh, you a shill for Amazon's, or just don't shop much? Of course, if
price is your only criterion, you'll find deals anywhere, if you look
around.

I assume you have a Region 1 DVD player, but can your TV cope with NTSC?
(Is that right - the coding system US TV uses?) I've been caught out on
that a couple of times with DVDs of US TV shows. (They get released
months earlier than they do here.)
I could have sworn I checked when we bought the last (cheap) TV, which
is already playing up. Next time it's a big make, NTSC compatible, and a
long guarantee.

Alu found a hack which makes our player non-regional (we have to prime
it first) so we can play US films.
i resent buying a DVD in one area and being told that i cannot play it

it for my personal use where ever the hell i happen to be.

One of ours was all region when we bought it. We had to reprogram the
BIOS in the other, but now we can play anything, in theory. I've only
tried Regions 1 and 2. I've bought DVDs from China, but they were all
region or Region 2 - presumably aimed at Japan.

it for my personal use where ever the hell i happen to be.
One of ours was all region when we bought it. We had to reprogram the
BIOS in the other, but now we can play anything, in theory. I've only
tried Regions 1 and 2. I've bought DVDs from China, but they were all
region or Region 2 - presumably aimed at Japan.
I was under the impression that the region codes were not just another way
for the movie industry to frustrate customers, but are different because of
the varying video formats used throughout the world. I.e. PAL vs NTSC.
Then again, you don't really need a code for that I guess.

The main purpose of the region code is to have different
prices in different parts of the globe. Originally, there
also were different release times in different parts
of the globe. There are *8* DVD region codes.
I think only 6 are in actual use. Many DVD
players can do both PAL and NTSC. The only reason why
originally DVD players could not do both formats
was the legal risk of shipping such DVD players.

I have no taste and I learned how to swear from my mother.
It's a good movie, I have it on DVD-R and have watched it several times.
Kevin Spacey is excellent in the movie and it shows a quirky little
piece of Savannah. It actually made me want to visit the town just
because it looks so gorgeous. I give it a two thumbs up, check it out.
First time I watched it I had just busted up my ankle in an attempt to
learn snowboarding and so I was floating on Vicodin. It made the movie
almost ethereal. :) I've still found it to be wonderful on subsequent
sober viewings.

Only heard it's good--probably will never see it.
Per the thread title: I'd like to see Brokeback Mountain and
Capote...but I rarely see movies, except on TV.

I went to see the movie with my nephew. The movie was better then
I thought it would be... It's not really my type of movie, but it was
pretty entertaining, I was suprised though that my 7 year old nephew
didn't find it a little too violent...

had he read the book or had it read to him? that removes some
of the shock value.

Maybe he's read the original version - the Bible; they don't come much
more violent than that. Our local Christian bookshop had its entire
frontage and half the shop full of Narnia stuff when the film was new.
