Anyone else have problems with these? Sweet Evil Jesus, I'm on my 2nd
one now, and they very quickly lock up and die on me. This ***** drives
me crazy. They don't tell you jack squat in the product literature, the
so-called device manager software does absolutely nothing. It's all
fucked up, that's all I know. It was working beautifully earlier today,
now it's a piece ***** I'm ready to throw against the wall. Who are the
idiots that design this stuff? Jesus, I don't have time for this crap -
make your product idiot proof. Do they even test these things before
they make the decision to build and sell them?

I've received two dead Zen's from a guy who doesn't seem to learn. One
of them had a really trashed headphone jack (which I guess is a common
weakness) - it wound up being just an interesting dissection. The second
one had a fine headphone jack and earned me a couple dollars on ebay.
The little HDD in it had died.

I've got a discman type thing made by RCA, and I can put mp3's on CD and
play them in there great, plus I can play normal CD's with it too, and
FM radio if I want.

The Creative Zen was the first one I had. Died on me the first time the

I'm in the 82% of people who like the iPods. My was the first to get
one, she picked up a 1GB shuffle when they were first introduced. I
picked up a 4GB 1st generation nano when they came out - and got a
silicon jacket case for it and that made it perfect for cycling. The
wife just replaced the shuffle with a 2nd generation nano, 4GB, and
their switch to an aluminum case is SO much nicer. The original nanos
had to be handled with those cotton museum gloves if you want to avoid
scratches.

I don't like the idea of not being able to replace the battery. My Palm
has an internal battery which never held a charge for a very long time.
I really don't use it that much, but if I could never use it as an mp3
player, it wouldn't last 15 minutes before it died on me.

I really don't use it that much, but if I could never use it as an mp3
player, it wouldn't last 15 minutes before it died on me.
I can understand that concern, but it's not enough to make me want a
much bulkier player in order to accommodate that in the design. I also
prefer the flash ram based players, because there's no getting around
the imminent death of the rechargeable battery, I can at least have a
player where I get ~15 hours of play between charges. That gives me
about 3 years before I hit the "low" end of the charge/discharge cycles
of battery old age.
If I *still* wanted to keep it after that point I could send it back to
the OEM, or have one of the many, many aftermarket repair places put a
new internal battery in (I'd be the kind who buys the battery for $20
and DIY, to be honest). In this case I'm now using a player that's been
off the market for 3 years, with a brand new battery --- and that
replacement battery is available BECAUSE of the incredible popularity of
the unit originally.
Creative's players may have a big aftermarket - I really can't profess
to know. I do know that you can still purchase
greater-than-original-capacity replacements for the very 1st iPods.
....the iPhone on the other hand...that design is BAD. I know a number of
people who carry a spare cell battery around with them, certainly
somebody who's going to be hopping around online all the time, listening
to music, shooting pictures, watching movies, watching <sigh>
youtube....(and driving...). Well, sticking the battery dead center and
making it impossible to swap in and out is a mistake.

up.

Well, I gambled and did a quick format of the thing, that seemed to
work. They do not make this easy. Last one I had locked up on me and
then eventually just died after I tried to get it back, it wouldn't turn

If Microsoft added that, they'd probably get an anti-trust lawsuit
slapped on them for monopolizing the audio conversion market. There's
lots of stuff Windows should be able to do, but can't because they'll
get sued if they put it in.
