Object: My cat got sprayed by a skunk
Leo showed up at my bedroom window at 2 a.m. (Standard Time). I let him
in...and was instantly astonished as to how he could stand the stench he
was carrying on him.
I let him go to the kitchen and eat something, while I did a quick Web
search on "skunk" "spray" "remedy". The first few sites I skimmed all
agreed: hydrogen peroxide + baking soda + liquid soap. (Thank Jah I had
those ingredients in the house at the time.)
As quickly as possible I mixed up a batch, using Dawn (if it can clean
oil spills offa wildlife, it can only help with a skunked-up cat, ISTM).
The next ten minutes were among the most traumatic of Leo's lives. He's
a strong cat--I know from experience--so I was surprised I was able to
keep a grip on him long enough to work that stuff into his fur, let it
sit and work for a few minutes, rinse him off in the kitchen sink, then
haul him off to the bathroom to towel-dry him. (Using the hair dryer
woulda been the last straw for him.)
Right now he's sitting on his favorite throw rug, bathing himself,
trying to get the rest of the rinse water off. He hates me now. I'm sure
he won't let me near him for a few hours; I've had to bathe him before,
so I know.
I've got all the windows open to air out the downstairs, even though
it's 43F (6C) outdoors. I tossed the shirt I was wearing in the garbage
out doors. I feel like taking a stiff drink, a hot meal and a long snooze.
So ends yet another intriguing feline anecdote. HAND.

I had a cat sprayed in the face once. She came home with her
eyes just about swelled shut. Three tomato juice baths and
three with detergent and we could just tolerate her being in
the room, though not on the bed. I hope your concoction worked
better than the old wives' one.

Most definitely. Tomato juice removes some of the spray (which is
polecat musk oil, BTW), but only barely masks the smell. Detergent won't
really deodorize, either.
Dawn is excellent for removing oils--it's what environmentalists use to
clean off wildlife after an oil spill--but the stench gets right into
the fur, and no soap or detergent works very well at all on that.
Hydrogen peroxide combined with baking soda neutralizes the smell and
eliminates it in a hurry.
Leo just got up from a long nap after a rough night. Had some grub, and
now he's outside...rolling around in the dirt, so he doesn't smell like
dishwashing liquid. Beats reeking of skunk musk.

i tried the peroxide/baking soda/dawn combo a couple summers ago when
luce got it in the face. twice. in a month. it worked *amazingly*
well. of course, having to bathe her in my (very small) shower in my
(very small) bathroom without a functional door was kind of like
greased pig wrestling.
i don't envy you having to bathe a cat.
skunk juice is brutal.

Oh dear...what an ordeal! Maybe he *couldn't* stand the smell anymore
and it's why he came to your window. Well, perhaps he'll be glad
after he calms down that he isn't so smelly anymore. I've had similar
events with my cat, although not from a skunk. And my cat is declawed
(only front claws, we got him that way) and he still finds a way to
inflict plenty of owies!

I remember when our dog (long before Josh) got sprayed by a skunk.
my folks used tomato juice to get it out. I don't remember if it
worked because I pretty much lack a sense of smell.

Lucky you. Any creature with normal olfactory sense is repulsed by the
stink of polecat musk. It's just such an ugly, even angry, stench...like
burnt sewage. That's the only way I know to describe it.

Yeah, but it costs 500 an ounce for a similar smelling certain weed.
How strange.

I woke up to the very thick potent smell of skunk once. Turns out the skunk

itself was outside and the smell wafted into our 4 or 5 huge open
windows. not
the best way to kick off the morning. The smell of skunk is very bad,
not anything
you wanna be running around trying to get ahold of.

PetsMart, or other pets supply stores, sells Nature's Miracle "Skunk

Thanks. I'll pick some up, since Leo still has some vestigial
odoriferousness. And some Clear the Air Skunk Odor Remover, since the
atmosphere in the house got somewhat tainted by that
less-than-enchanting musk.
