Reminds me of when my cat Bijou climbed a tree to get at a nest, then
suddenly got dive-bombed by a flock of blue jay. And jays are damned
mean birds.

Well, your cat was trying to eat their babies! I'd be mean too.

The day he tried to attack a fledgling starling was most humorous. The
fledgling was out of its nest, standing by the fence next to the
driveway. Bijou charged at it, but the fence stopped him. A second
later, a swarm of starlings was bearing down on him from all directions.
He had to make a beeline to the garage and hide under my car to get away
from them. After that, he gave up on birds and stuck to catching mice,
like he was supposed to.

i was surprised at just how tough jays are ,
i thought the magpies were the bosses around here ,
but when the jays show up , everything leaves ,
norther flickers are tough guys too but i've never seen ,
a flicker and a jay at the same time in 1 spot ,
so i don't know who'ed win in that case

i get tickled at the mockingbird that constantly attacks kisa when she's out
front under the trees. i dive bombs her over and over and she just ignores
it.

Are the magpies you get there the same as the ones here? Member of the
crow family, black and white with hints of green and blue? Can you
post a link to a picture?

That's the same one, Pica pica is the latin name. I saw one in my
local park chasing a rat by the duck pond. The buggers will eat
anything.

% will have the black-billed magpie, Pica pica, which is the same
species we have. They're tough, bossy birds, but carrion crows (your
hoodies) have been known to kill them if they got too close to the
crows' nest.

The opinions given above may be mine. They might also
just be what I feel like saying right now, okay?

I've seen that, the magpies scatter when a carrion crow appears. I
watched a crow knock a lesser black-backed gull from the air, he shot
straight up from the ground and hit it just behind the eye and it fell
like a stone and lay there flapping around dazed for several minutes.
His mate was brooding on the nest not too far away at the time.
