My Fellow Americans - Note About Flags at Half Mast... |
That's for Gerald Ford, not Saddam (I know, it was an active and
confusing week).

Definitely confusing. God, just put it out for my old man who died
this year. A ball turrett gunner on B-24s out of Italy, 43 and 44,
through 45.
He saw one when he was 70, and asked, "How the hell did I fit into that
thing?"
He'd say, "We went out with 100 planes. Everyone in the middle got
killed...." start crying, and hit the liquor cabinet. Say something
bad about him, I'll be at your door by the time you finish the post.
Packing heat.
God Bless Jim McGu.....etc.

Hey Brian. I'll fly a flag, any flag, for any man or woman who fought a
war they didn't want to, but knew they had to. That takes guts. You're
rightly proud of your dad and, fwiw, so am I.

Hunter Thompson's ashes got fired out of

It's almost reminiscent of the medieval mania for saints' relics, where
abbeys would vie for the fingerbones of Saint Whoosis of Wheresis, believing
the bones would elicit some special favour from the dead saint. On the
other hand, I read somewhere that President Ford designed his own funeral,
so maybe he planned his last national tour too? I dunno, but I'd feel
better about it if I knew he did.
I'd like to be stuck directly into the ground where things could be planted
over me so I could do some good, after the organs and stuff are harvested,
but I think they have laws against that. I think rather than anyone fuss
over my body, I'd like to make a book list of really good ones, and have
people who would miss me choose something from that list to read. Leaving
behind a really good book experience seems kind of worthwhile.

It's called a "green burial" and it's
legal in your state:

I first heard about it during Nate's
funeral on Six Feet Under. Who sez tv

I HAVE to be cremated. I have a phobia of bugs and stuff eating my shell.
The thought of my shell sitting in the ground to be dug up again, or eaten
by animals just freaks me out to no end.
I just don't know where I want my ashes to be spread... Possibly the ocean,
since I love scuba so much and it's a peaceful world under the water.

It's called a "green burial" and it's legal in your state:

I first heard about it during Nate's funeral on Six Feet Under. Who sez tv
ain't edyoocashunal?

I HAVE to be cremated. I have a phobia of bugs and stuff eating my shell.
The thought of my shell sitting in the ground to be dug up again, or eaten
by animals just freaks me out to no end.
I just don't know where I want my ashes to be spread... Possibly the ocean,
since I love scuba so much and it's a peaceful world under the water.
Will you have photos taken?
I was photographer when they scattered my friends wife's ashes in the
ocean, also at two other funerals. that seemed really weird to me,
but the people wanted it.

When are they gonna stop draggin' that
man's dead body around? Services in Palm
Springs, then fly it to Washington,
funeral there, then put it in the House
side for public honoring, THEN move it
to the Senate side for more. This is all
after the funeral, mind you. THEN fly it
to Michigan? Jayzus.
I hear ya. Betty needs a drink by now.
Seriously, it was cute, the thing I saw on c-span, he was in the war,
at every naval battle for 2 1/2 years. Then he went to Yale(12 miles
down the street), went back home to Grand Rapids, ran for congress,
walked with Jack Kennedy every day, cause Jack had 2 more years on him.
Was told by LBJ he was on the Warren commision, and you couldn't say
no to LBJ... When LBJ retired, he brought Gerry into the office, and
nearly apologized... great story, great long interview.
'Give me your mandate", I remember him saying. Then Jimmy Carter beat
his socks off.
weirdness.
Brian.

I like the Jewish/Muslim tradition of sticking them in the ground as
soon as possible. Jews have a gathering a year afterwards, for the stone
setting, when everyone has had time to organise themselves. I don't know
if there's a Muslim equivalent.

The opinions given above may be mine. They might also
just be what I feel like saying right now, okay?

I like that idea, too, but I also like
the 3-day wakes. Well, the ones in my
Irish-American clan anyways. I sat Shiva
once for a friend's mother and kinda
missed the body being there. Gave the
event some gravitas, imo.
But I like the idea of cremation best of
all. There's a cemetery here so full
that they're building above ground,
multi-story tombs like condos. Yuck.
I don't know
if there's a Muslim equivalent.
Hmmm, neither do I. I'll put that on my
"must research some day" list.
Death/internment rituals fascinate me.

I like the idea of a 3 day wake as well. Full on party, everyone drunk,
disorderly, and dancing, and celebrating my life, not mourning my death.

Me too! Especially mummies! I LOVE mummies. I donated my body to science
so it will be two years before what's left of me is cremated and buried and
they pay for it all.

Sounds like we've been to the same kinds
of, um, celebrations.

So, does this mean 2 parties? Rock on,
Rhiannon!
