Slipped and fell on her way into work and broke her shoulder. She also hit
her head above her eye and cut it open. It is now bruised and almost
swelled shut. Does she call me for help? No. She takes a taxi to the
hospital and sits for three hours waiting for an x-ray all by herself. If
her arm wasn't broken I would have shaken her. The emerg doc tells her it's
broken but the orthopedic surgeon can't pin it back together until tomorrow
morning so he sends her home with pain meds and her shoulder and arm in a
pretty neat looking harness to keep the arm still and close to the body.
The swelling and bruising is monstrous and she still has surgery to look
forward to. I told her I did not want to upset her or chastise her but she
HAS to call me when these things happen. I didn't find any of this out
until she got home from the hospital and then she called me to tell me what
happened. I went right over there and spent the day with her. I told her
that I know aging is difficult and that she wants to be treated like an
independent adult but she has to rely on her children when she ends up in a
situation like this. I also said not to give me the "I didn't want to worry
you" speech she usually gives me because it worries me A LOT more that she
spent three hours at the hospital alone. After I told her I love her to
death and want to be there for her, the same way she wanted to be there for
me when I was rushed to the hospital with a gall bladder attack a couple
years ago, she promised that from now on she would call me the minute she
needs me. I am so afraid for her. A little frustrated too. I know how
badly she wants to fight aging, but how can I get her to accept that this is
the natural order of things and you have to start accepting your
limitations. My poor mom. This next new stage in life is not going to be
an easy one.

Hey hon, I didn't even see this until now, but thank you, and it turns out
they're going to wait to see what the bone does on its own before
attempting surgery. Poor woman has had a rough year health wise and she's
only 68, although she has always seemed younger than her age to me.

ow ow ow. i hope the surgery goes well and that she heals quickly. if
i fell and broke my shoulder i'd so be calling for somebody to hold my
hand (the other one) in the waiting room at the ER. that kind of stuff
is SCARY!!! no matter what age you are.

Thanks Elegy. That's exactly what I said to her. I would be so calling
EVERYBODY and yelling help into the phone I would end up with fourteen
people in the emergency room. She can be so stubborn sometimes. Grrrrrr...

Good news El! She saw the orthopedic surgeon and he decided against surgery
right away. He said it was fractured in two places below the ball joint
but since the joint is intact he would rather wait and see what the bone
does on its own. In six weeks he wants to x-ray it again and if there is no
improvement she may need surgery then, but for now she has to keep it in the
harness contraption, stay off work, and take it easy. Whew!

Thank you Bruce. How you doing? Last few days have been rough for you.
Thanks for asking. I'm surviving. Today I'm really tired, and a bit
queasy. Last night was rough for me. I just couldn't get to sleep no
matter what I tried. Eventually I did.
I have only a bit over an hour left before I have to leave for the airport.
I think this is going to be an fairly easy week for me but then I have no
idea what's involved with their "orientation class". I tried asking one HR
person and never got a reply.
I have to work Saturday as well, so I'll only have Sunday off out of the
next 7 days.
Bruce.
