sounds tasty.
The guy in the liquor store gave me a little shot of an anisette the
other night. Warmed me through the grocery store.

I had to look that one up, didn't know what it is.
What's the C2H5OH level in it?
"Through the use of a new flavorless, odorless malt-alcohol base" ...
Hmmm, I'll see if that is making an appearance where I am.

I take it you belong to a pro-booze church congregation. As do I. Pull
up a sharp rock sometime and I shall tell you a merry tale or two about
that.

The Greek Orthodox are a lusty bunch, particularly when it comes to
imbibing. Hellenes heve a tolerance for alcohol that even the Irish
envy. There is no major function in the GOC that isn't accompanied by
hooch. Dinners and weekend festival are flowing over with Greek beer and
wine (and they make some downright potent vino, lemme tell ya).
Rehearsal dinners, wedding receptions, even funeral luncheons are
replete with ouzo and metaxa. It's even a solid tradition that,
following the Easter liturgy, the faithful gather in the fellowship hall
and toast the Resurrection of Christ with champagne.
One day, after liturgy and fellowship, I walked out into the church
hallway. My then-pastor, Fr. Dean, was in the office with a group of
parishioners. He saw me, opened the door, and said, "Hey, Nicholas, come
on in! Mariellen [the Sunday School superintendant, FYI] brought in some
homemade metaxa. Come on and have some!" I gave him a quizzical look and
said, "I just had Communion." He replied, "Yeah, I know; so did everyone
else in here. Come on in--this is really good metaxa!" So I figured, if
the priest, his wife, the Sunday School super and several members of the
parish council didn't have a problem with it, I wasn't gonna be an ingrate.
And it was some mighty fine homemade metaxa, I'm tellin' ya. Opai!

I was watching, "Catholicism For Dummies" and they reiterated that
yes, alcohol is ok. Along with cigars, apparently.
I think my father hung his hat on the Catholic booze tradition.
I know I do.
