Object: my parents
are out at a new years eve party. throughout my childhood, and
probably before, they got together with my father's high school
friends and their wives every year. the group has been shrinking
over the years as people pass away, but they still hang out with
my father's high school friends every new year's eve. my father
will be 80 this week. his friends are still mostly high school
friends, a couple from college, and one or two from his first
job out of college. he never made any friends after that.
i have a new friend. until recently, all my friends were from
college. i finally made another friend i think will be a keeper.
i won't be my father, making a set number of friends, then
slowly losing them over the years to death. it would be easy to
do, but this coming year i'm going to make an effort to increase
new friendships.
as good a resolution as any, i suppose.

joe was in charge. dan and i made the cranberry chutney and
the dessert, and dan made the salad. joe did the soup, ducks,
and veg. i'm lucky to have married a good cook!

Sounds like an excellent resolution Lisa. I'm very guilty of that as well.
Virtually all my friends are from my much younger years.

to make matters worse, all but one of my old friends had drifted
out of this area, and this one friend is about an hour's drive
away. it makes for not much socializing outside of email and the
occasional phone call. it's time things changed.

I'm in the same boat. I was a reclusive nerd growing up so I didn't have
many friends to begin with. Of those, most of them have moved too far away
to be easily reachable, or I've just lost track of them. Only one is less
than an hour away, but he has an very busy calendar and never sits still
long enough to visit with. The next good friend is an hour away.

cyberfriends do count, but i can't go out to lunch with you
even occasionally. as much as i don't always feel like it, i
do need some real life companionship outside of my immediate
family.

I suppose I have some, even if it's Hannah's friends rather than mine. I
actually phoned my both my sisters and my brother today; we don't do
that. I do see my wife's relatives (she has an uncle here in Leeds, so
it's hard not to), but it's a year or more since I saw any of mine.

my family gets together several times a year, usually at my
elder brother's house. he's a 2 1/2 hour drive from here, so
it's doable for a party on occasion. it's another hour's drive
to my parents' house. we're going there saturday for my father's
80th birthday party, and will stay overnight.
joe has one friend whom we see quite often, but i can barely
tolerate being in the same room with the guy, so he doesn't in
the least count as my friend.

Traditional East End British? I like the idea of onion gravy with toad
in 't hole. You missed out proper chips and tomato ketchup. From a long
dead thread, baked beans on toast isn't a common dish over there either.

i don't know about the pig's ears and jellied eels, and i
don't know what welks is. i've never heard of hp sauce, so i
guess we don't have it.
think you can get the food to me still hot? :-)
