Mystery |
I have three drives where to play music CD's, and only two connected to the
sound card. I just inserted one CD in the third drive (no connection to the
sound card), and started playing the CD. There is sound in the home theatre.
How the heck does it do it?

It uses the IDE connector and gets to the sound card via the
motherboard. I've given up using the CD to sound card cables.

This is new to me. I am wondering now whether my other two drives can do the
same. But I am not in the mood of disconnecting just to see.

Through the IDE/ATAPI or SCSI or whatever connection. I don't think all
optical drives can do that, but some certainly can.

I see. I am glad my drive can do it. I can get sound from the three drives
OK.
Remember I had problems with two drives? I connected the one which is master
to the secondary mother-board channel (remember I have an Ultra ATA
expansion card), and it seems it was the cure for all my problems. Do you
have an explanation?

Not really; magic? I know that some drives don't seem to like being
master or slave to each other.

The odd thing is that when I only had WinXP installed, everything was fine.
As soon as I installed Mandrake (in its own partition, of course), all those
problems started.
I will never understand computers at all. And it seems that not even the
hardware manufacturers do.
