Object: need computer help
i've got some kind of spyware thing that's popping up browser windows
left and right and i can't seem to get rid of it. spybot search and
destroy'll pick it up, but it's always running in memory and thus it
can't get rid of it. if i restart and allow spybot s&d to run
immediately, the same thing happens.
it's driving me freaking batty.
anybody have any suggestions?

do a web search on the name of the malware and try to find a manual
procedure for removing it. be patient. i've had malware attacks that took me
hours to do a complete search and destroy on. some of these things do defeat
antispyware products and are remarkably tenacious.

Ad-Aware works pretty well for me. It's free at www.lavasoft.com.
It's not always automatic. Yesterday I went after a winlogon trojan I
had that, when I ran AA, would automatically reboot my machine. But it
did it after a slight delay, so I practiced hitting the Cancel button,
which stopped the sweep but kept the found bug, and then hitting the
series of buttons that would delete it, and I finally got fast enough
to get it done before the reset, and now I'm good. Good luck.

If your using XP or later, choose Start - Run and type "msconfig" and hit
enter. Under the Startup tab, look for anything suspicious that is loading
with Windows. If you're not sure, feel free to disable things. MSConfig
will give you the opportunity to re-enable them at the next startup.
Of course it could also be running as a service, which is a much longer
list to look through.
It could also re-enable it's startup status during shutdown. If that is the
case, you'd have to go into the Task Manager and look for the culprit and
manually shut it down.

Run a SD spybot
Then
CWShredder
http://www.trendmicro.com/cwshredder/
Then
Hijack this to see what's doing what to your browser

Would suggest visiting alt.privacy.spyware, they are pretty experienced with
this type of thing and can help recover a system pretty well. For now, I
would empty your cookies, and look through installed programs, under
add/remove programs, also check under tools | manage add-ons and see if
there's anything suspicious there. I would also recommend, if possible,
getting antivirus such as Symantec on your system.

What's the name of the spyware? You might try booting into safe-mode and
rerunning Spybot S&D. Also, get a copy of Adaware and scan with that
too.

can you find it by ctrl-alt-del then look under processes? you
might need to google the name to find the name of the process,
but then you can end it.
