neurologist appointment today |
For anyone who has been following my little health saga, here's the latest:
Finally, good news!
The neurologist I saw today for a second opinion was nice, approachable and
actually knew what he's doing.
His opinion is that I may just be one of the few % of the population that
have a naturally abnormal EEG (or my antidepressant produced the
abnormality) and that I may not even have epilepsy after all. In which case
I've been taking 2 anti-convulsants since 2004 for absolutely no reason. He
believes the symptoms I'm experiencing (pain, tingling sensations, restless
legs) may all be medication induced too. And the meds are likely to have at
least partially caused my weight gain over the past few years, so stopping
them should help me lose weight.
So the plan is to slowly go off both epilepsy meds over the next 6-8 weeks,
and then go see him again at the end of March next year, when the meds are
completely out of my system. Then get a new EEG to get an accurate baseline
and make sure the results are interpreted properly this time. That will
show whether my abnormal EEG (if it is still abnormal) is indicative of a
problem or if it's best to leave well enough alone. If there's a problem,
he'll figure out the *right* meds to put me on (he believes putting me on
Epilim [valproate] was a bad idea).
So, as of tonight I'm reducing my meds. And as of tomorrow morning I'm
increasing my exercise (slowly) and improving my diet (I think I've
forgotten what an apple looks like). All my doctors are telling me to
exercise and lose weight, so hopefully it will help my physical and
psychological health if I start trying. And since I see a light at the end
of the tunnel, hopefully I will have some success this time.
Damn it feels good to finally have someone listen and have a plan about what
to do to make me feel better. And it's so good to be right! I was right to
stick to my guns and ask for a second opinion. I was most likely
misdiagnosed and incorrectly medicated, and my problems weren't just all
psychological as the previous neuro I saw told me. I've been putting up
with all these niggling problems since early this year, and especially since
July. Hopefully as the meds get out of my system I'll start to feel more
comfortable and more like myself again. And if not, at least I have someone
treating me who is actually interested in finding the answer, not just
pushing me out the door.
I'm so relieved.
Kylie

Yeah, I marked it on my calendar and the taper is actually going to take
more like 8-10 weeks, but there are big risks (eg triggering a seizure, even
if I don't normally have them) that are caused by going too fast so I plan
to be very careful.
Then get a new EEG to get an accurate baseline

It would be great to come out of this with no diagnosis and no medication,
but if the EEG shows something that does require treatment, at least I know
I'm getting the right treatment this time.

It's such a relief to have someone not just tell me it's all in my head!
Yeah, I'll check in with my GP in a few weeks, or earlier if i need to. My
GP wanted me to check in monthly anyway because I filled in a
depression/anxiety questionnaire last time I was there and now he wants to
check my progess. Plus my pdoc is always willing to answer the odd general
health question I throw his way.

He's very difficult to get in to see, but that's because he's one of the
best in the state, if not the country. I have an appointment scheduled for
the end of March, and by then the meds should be out of my system and we can
start the testing with a blank slate.
He's given me a schedule how fast to taper off each med, and said I can go
slower if I like. Plus I can call if I have problems, side effects etc.
I'm seeing my GP in about 3 weeks, so he can check up on how I'm doing.
Believe me, if I get into trouble i'm going to yell loudly until someone
hears me. I've had enough of these meds and their side effects, I'm not
taking any more crap.

It's just sinking in, even though I replied already.
Here's a doctor who considered the possibility that
Rx effects were due to the Rx! A marvel! A paragon!
A rarity!

Isn't it?! Somehow I've managed to find a good doctor who acknowledges the
unwanted effects that medications can cause and doesn't just expect patients
to put up with them if it's not absolutely necessary. I think his is one of
those names (like competent government employees etc) that I will take a
mental note of and make sure that I tell anyone in a similar situation to go
straight to him and avoid dealing with the less competent doctors that they
might be referred to first.

Thanks Gayle. I was so relieved when he told me that I probably don't have
epilepsy and that going off the meds will most likely make me feel better.
I wanted to go off the meds anyway, and the extra bonus is that because I
now no longer have the epilepsy diagnosis, I can continue to drive while I
taper off - I was expecting to have to stop driving for at least 3 months.
It's just so great to feel like my problems are being taken seriously, and
that something can be done about them.
I'm almost through day one of the taper (Keppra down from 1500mg to 1000mg -
it will stay at that level for 10 days before the next phase) and so far no
withdrawal effects, and no worsening of my symptoms. They're not better
either, but I wasn't expecting they would be.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that all will go well. I will call the
neurologist if I have any questions or problems between now and my
appointment in March, and I'm seeing my GP once a month anyway.
