A neighbor is selling an 82 VW Rabbit with only 60k miles on it. It's in
pretty amazing shape for a car that old - the best part is that I'm getting
it for $100.
Should make a great commuter vehicle for when the weather is poor and I
can't ride my bike.

I had a Jetta years ago, it was a really easy car to work on a drove great.
I'm not going to be able to give the car a spin until tomorrow but the
little rabbits were known for fun. An original GTI is quite the collector's
vehicle in good shape. This is just the, uh, grandma version.

That could turn into a 'collector classic'.
I wonder why it's called a 'Rabbit' in north America? In Europe it's known
as the 'Golf'. (The name 'Rabbit' seems rather silly for any vehicle, let
alone a good one - not that 'Golf' is exactly brilliant).

I had no idea what a VW "Rabbit" was, so had to google for it. They
were/are known as VW Golf here in Europe.
Don't know about other countries, but a car named rabbit wouldn't have
made it in Spain (hint: Spanish "conejo" ("rabbit") == "*****" (female
pudenda)).

we had 'golfs', too. i think they came out a little after the
rabbit did. not the same car, at least in the us.

The rabbit is VW's A1 platform car, the first golf was the replacement
built on the A2 platform initially. My Jetta was an 86 on the A2

Huh? Never heard of that one. Chevrolets are very, very rare over here
(you see Fords, but it's mostly Euro - and some Korean - cars over
here). Why was it a poor name?

It would have been Opel, I think, unless you have a different brand name
for them in Spain. Here they're Vauxhalls. The current models are Corsas
in the UK.
What is Spanish for the astronomical Latin 'nova'?

"Nova". Not very imaginative, I'm afraid...

Yeah, I got the joke already ("no va" == "it doesn't run"). I was a bit
slow on this one, because "nova" suggests to me a "nova", a new star -
or just the female word for "new" ("nueva" in Castilian, but "nova" in
pretty much any other language spoken here except Basque).
However, these things DO happen in reality: the Mitsubishi Pajero had to
undergo a name change before being introduced in the Spanish market,
because "pajero/a" (or "pajillero/a") == "wanker" (I don't remember what
that vehicle was finally called over here, but I swear it's true).

It's hard to believe that car companies can spend millions on finding
neutral names, and still do things like that. It's not as if Spanish
wasn't one of the major languages.

Makes one think. This sort of mistake is easier to justify when branding
products for the Asian market. I'm thinking of Coca-Cola here. It might
be a urban myth, but I once read that the original adaptation of the
brand for the Chinese market actually made sense in Mandarin, but what
it meant didn't make the product to appear very appealing, let alone
appetising (something to do with dead people?). So they had it changed
to something that resembled less the original "Coca-Cola" name, but
which translated to something like "sweetness in your mouth, happiness
in your life" (more or less, I'm writing from (dim) memory).

I think 'Chevrolet' is a General Motors brand, in which case it would be
'Vauxhall' or 'Opel' in Europe. There was certainly a 'Vauxhall Nova' sold
in the UK.

The motor manufacturing industry is multi-national these days; many
"Japanese" cars sold in Europe are built in Europe, and manufacturers even
build engines and parts for each other. Ultimate ownership of brand names,
and trading arrangements, mean that there are probably few major car brands
that can be considered wholly 'of' any one country.
