I'm starting from scratch with a new computer, so I will have missed lots
of posts - but I'm back, and this is a nice machine :))

Nice one! Would you care to share some specs?

Nice one! Would you care to share some specs?

If you insist ... HP laptop, model zd7170ea, 17" 'widescreen'. Intel P4 3GHz
multi-threading CPU, 512MB RAM, PC-Card slot, multi-card reader, CD/DVD-RW,
4xUSB2, NIC, wireless, infrared, 'full-size' built-in keyboard with
seperate number pad.
It's a 'reconditioned' item, but looks and feels like new. It came with no
OS installed, just a boot notice that 'this machine is designed for you to
install your preferred OS' or words to that effect, and 3 'HP Mandrake 9.2'
CDs (I installed Mdk 10 'community' though, as that seemed to work better
overall). I still haven't got all the hardware working, but the bits I'm
really interested in right now are very nice :)))
I saw it in a small scruffy computer-shop window, all on its own apart from
lots of shabby cardboard boxes and second-hand Dell bits. Love at first
sight; I just /had/ to rescue it ;))

Sounds very very nice! And from what I recall from my HP laptops: HP have
got excellent support for their hardware, even on their linux version. So
if you can't get all the hardware working you could give that a try.

I saw it in a small scruffy computer-shop window, all on its own apart
from lots of shabby cardboard boxes and second-hand Dell bits. Love
at first sight; I just /had/ to rescue it ;))

Oh, I understand. It's just that I wouldn't want a laptop anymore, unless
I turn into a road warrior again (you know, have laptop, will travel...).
But the thrill of something new (as in, new to you or me), that I know
too well. And as laptops go, I think this is a very nice one (I checked
the HP site).
Enjoy!
Btw, your laptop is faster than my main computer, and it will probably
remain that way for a couple of years...

I intend to :))

My main PC is an AMD K6/2 500, so this laptop seems to move like lightning
:)) I think I might turn the desktop machine into a 'gateway' and set up a
little LAN - even though I live alone in a small flat <g>.

If you go wireless, be sure to read the manual - especially the security
concepts - and use all the security features.
In my building I have found three wireless systems that I can logon to
without even leaving my apartment. There are two more that I can get into
by taking the notebook out onto the balcony. And that's just with the
default antenna. With an add-on antennae, even a home-made Pringles can
antenna, I could likely draw in a dozen more.

I'd probably stick with wires. It's a local sport here in London, finding
wide-open wireless networks with broadband access. Apparently, some of the
stores in Oxford St even have networks with names identifying the store, and
the dept or floor ... all un-encrypted and accessible from a considerable
distance. One of these days someone is going to have a lot of fun.
Some businesses deliberately provide wireless access for their patrons, of
course, but they usually know what they're doing.
A recent BBC techy-geeky programme demonstrated how vulnerable many
wireless-enabled laptops are; their expert set up his machine in a cafe, and
was able to extract all sorts of stuff from other customers' machines
without them noticing.
