Hey, I have refrained from making real friends locally for several
years. But I know I need someone other than immediate family and my
cats to talk to.
I am an older heavyset woman in fair health. Just started another diet
today! I have lots to lose.
I have taken anti-depressents for a long time, I recently canned them
as I don't think they are doing any good. Doctor didn't argue with me
but did not offer an alternative.
I did have a good day on my birthday Jan 4th. Got out of the house 3
times.
I don't know how to do this group thing, please let me know. Catch ya
later.

walking every day at least 20 minutes with my complete focus on my feet
and legs helps immensely with my depression. this continuous activity also
helps with weight loss and other health issues.

Hi Itchy. Welcome to the group. Here in asd feel free to post whatever you
feel like saying at the time. People come here for support which can be
anything from drug advice to idle conversation.
The drug issue is an individual one. Since you've both taken and not taken
the AD (antidepressive) drugs, you can best judge how you do and feel both
on and off them.
For those that need AD drugs, there isn't much of an alternative. There are
coping techniques and compensations that can help, a physiatrist can best
help there, but for me the AD drugs work best.
Again, welcome.
Bruce.

It might be that you would need a reevaluation with a psychiatrist, with
perhaps more explanation. It's possible that you might need other
medications to help balance things more evenly. Sometimes it takes a long
time to get things exactly right.
Sorry to hear about your depression, each of us who have experiences to
share know what its about.

Alcohol is supposed to be bad for depression but I don't have that at
all. If I am low and I sink a few whiskeys it usually makes me feel
better. After that I usually sleep well and wake up feeling okay. I can
never get drunk though... or not very drunk anyway. I will throw up
before that happens due to my dicky tummy.

Weed did that for me which is why I quit it. Alcohol starts my mind
jumping onto other things. It disrupts the path I am on. Having said
that... when I am feeling really jolly and I drink it can bring me down
a bit too. I can get morose or inward looking. So, for me, alcohol is
very much a mood changer.

I find it to be very unpredictable anymore. I never know whether it's going
to mellow me out, or turn me manic and climbing the walls. Sometimes it'll
help me get to sleep but too often it buzzes me like a dozen cups of coffee.
I've never been able to find a pattern as to how I'll react.

Age and a consistent lifestyle make reactions easier to read. You
probably do have a pattern but it hasn't revealed itself to you yet.

For me it varies depending on how much I drink. If I drink enough to get
drunk, that's usually enough to trigger a multiday depressive crash. That
really takes the fun out of drinking.

Hi Itchy,
I don't have real friends except the ones I talk to here. Staying
isolated is a common theme among depressives. Yet the need for contact
remains. ASD is a good mid-ground for that.
Doctors don't really know what to do with depression unless you find
one who is very savvy and people sensitive. They tend to just go along
with what their patients tell them. "Depressive health thyself" sort of
thing.
Hope you find some contact here. This place can get a bit rowdy
sometimes because most of the people here have issues of one type or
another. But over the years I have found great comfort here when I've
needed it.
Good luck.

Ha!!
One thing I have done that does not help me getting over depression is
moving my elderMom into the house to live. But I just couldn't see her
being in a Nursing Home in the hands of others. Seeing her in pain
everyday, well, it's hard.
I recently bleached my hair blonde and updated my look a bit to feel
better. It helps a little. But I sometimes I wish I could be a hermit
out in the beautiful backwoods (with a cabin full of necessities, of
course) Just me and my cats. And my husband dropping by once in a
while.........LOL........ I'm rambling. thanks

Part of me wants to withdraw in to the middle of the woods and become a
hermit too. But I would miss my cable, DSL, TIVO, internet, friends,
family, walmart, etc., etc., etc. So here I am, still in the middle of
civilization, next to a mall.

You're very welcome. Rambling is my speciality! It is good to get a
reply. It is that need for contact I was talking about. Conversely not
getting a reply can be a bummer sometimes and that happens too.
Sometimes the changes we need to make are minor, sometimes major.
Movement of some sort or another has always been something I do. I'm
just not one to sit down and wallow. Its not that it always works in
fact mostly it doesn't yet at least I feel I am doing something.
I love cats as well. There are a lot of cat people on this group and
quite a few dog lovers as well. I have three cats. One is just a kitten
and he has been great fun.

Hi Itchy, welcome to ASD. As far as the group thing goes, you post,
someone replies then someone else replies to that reply with a reply
that has nothing to do with the first reply and only a passing

Rory Stewart? I haven't read his book (I'm finding it harder and harder

"Thud" by Terry Pratchett. I got that for Xmas 2005). I don't have the
