Thousands of toads are mysteriously exploding in Hamburg, where
visitors to parks have been warned to watch out for this odd
occurrence.
Eyewitnesses say the toads swell up to three and a half times their
normal size before suddenly exploding - sending entrails flying metres
into the air.
According to animal welfare workers the city's toad population is
rapidly decreasing. Nature protection worker Werner Smolnik said that
over the last four days at least a thousand toads had died in scenes
reminiscent of a science fiction film.
Smolnik said: "It is a complete mystery, we have a lot of ideas which
we are following up, but at the moment we haven't the faintest idea if
any of them are correct.
"It could be an unknown virus, or a fungus that has infected the water
or a defence mechanism against aggressive crows which have appeared in
the area recently.
"You see the toads crawling along the ground, swelling and getting
bigger as they go until they are like little tennis balls, and then
they suddenly explode."
Vet Otto Horst added: "I have never seen a thing like it."
"It's a real puzzle," agreed Janne Kloepper from the Hamburg Institute
for Hygiene and the Environment, adding: "If this keeps up, there will
be no toads left in Hamburg.' - ananova.com

haha.. :) Well yeah it is yucky, but on the more serious side of
things, we have a major cane toad problem in queensland and of course
they are hopping the border in droves too. It would be a horrid way to
die for sure, but I am wondering how on earth we are going to solve
this one? We can't introduce another something or other that will eat
the toads, because we've gone through that disaster time and again,
but the toads are creating havic that's for sure.
Still and all I couldn't see people all dressed in raincoats and
wellies due to toads exploding everywhere. Ick! I don't think I could
leave the house!

aside from their presence, what harm do toads do?
in the old testament, one of the plagues sent down upon the
egyptians was frogs. my son asked why it was a problem to have a
plague of frogs, and i couldn't answer. other than pollination
problems, maybe.

Oh, and beneficial flying insects that frequent both ponds and other areas
would also be in bad shape, making people miserable. Then, the frogs would
start to starve, and all sorts of annoying bug larvae would feed on them
resulting in a plague of annoying insects eventually, couple years later.
Bloodsucker kinds that first live in stagnant water, like ponds.

It would wipe-out any freshwater fishery for a number of years to come and
that would also be bad for hunting of freshwater fish-eating species of
birds.

Here's a bit of information:
http://www.amonline.net.au/factsheets/canetoad.htm
Cane Toads are considered a pest in Australia because they:
poison pets and injure humans with their toxins
poison many native animals whose diet includes frogs, tadpoles and
frogs' eggs
eat large numbers of honey bees, creating a management problem for
bee-keepers
prey on native fauna
compete for food with vertebrate insectivores such as small skinks
may carry diseases that are can be transmitted to native frogs and
fishes.

egyptians was frogs. my son asked why it was a problem to have a

I don't really know either. Funny thing is I am not in the least bit
affected by frogs, but I hate the toads. Perhaps because I've been
conditioned to hate them I don't know. But they are so grotesque to
look at. I think that's what it is.

My guess is chemcial pollutants. There is a chemical that is spread on
dirt roads and race tracks that makes frogs and toads swell up and explode
after they crawl over it. Salt, too. One is for melting ice in winter and
the other for keeping dust down in summer. Deposits and residues kill
frogs by making them swell up explode.
Vet Otto Horst added: "I have never seen a thing like it."
Sometimes I wonder about vets. Lots of amphibians swell up and explode if
exposed to certain pollutants.

Thats one of the things the translation was missing:
the exploding toads were all from a small articifial
lake near a race track, an the pollutes from the
race track end up in that artificial lake.

That is the most likely thing, then. Have they checked the lake for
frog-lethal pollutants? Both salt used for deicing and the salt-like
chemical used to keep dust down will do it. Very big problem in Canada,
lots of unpaved road still and lots of salt used on roads all winter.
Kills all of the amphibious animals that have to breathe some through
their skin, many swell up and burst, depends on the pores, but they all
die, frogs, toads, newts, salamanders.
There are Mexican farmers who are self-regulating the use of such
chemicals on farms, their products have a 'frog-friendly' stamp on them.
Maybe it will catch on more.

A German gets elected Pope of Rome, and toads in his homeland start

A similar thing crossed my mind. Maybe God is offering an Old Testament
style warning to Thomas and all the other Germans who despise the pope.

So the maples formed a union and demanded equal rights. The oaks are
just too greedy, we will make them give us light! Now there's no more oak
oppression for they passed a nobel law, and the trees are all kept equal by
hatchet, axe and saw.

I just read about this today. The most recent theory (and I stumbled
on this through MSN.com so take it for what it's worth) is that hungry
crows are plucking out the livers of the toads and that the sac somehow
fills with air through the puncture wound, resulting in a painful
death. Me, I'm leaning toward it as an ominous sign of impending doom
for all humankind. It's such an obvious sign, no one could mistake it.
