It seems so obvious to a sufferer.

The opinions given above may be mine. They might also
just be what I feel like saying right now, okay?

I thought he got it pretty well right. An overview , of course, but
accurately stated. I especially liked this paragragh.>

"Depression is an agonising illness that takes over your life, screws up
your brain chemistry, makes you cry over the silliest little things, kills your
sex drive, shatters all interest in the things you usually love doing, isolates
you from friends, partners and family, makes you sleep all day and lie awake
all night, either exaggerates or assassinates your appetite, takes you to a
point where you think it's quite normal to hurt yourself and lastly, when the
alarm bells are screeching, makes a compelling case that you'd be better off
dead. That is depression. It can affect anyone. It does not discriminate. It
doesn't care what class you're from, what your sexual preference is, what
ethnic group you belong to, what job you do, how old you are.

Dear Alan,
I read the article and I have much much sympathy and empathy for what the
writer said. And so too, he made an important point about types and variety in
depression.
Still . . . I cannot get over thinking that it is good to hear a bit of "stiff
upper lip" from others (a bit, not ignorant prattle) because there is some part
of depression -- at least in mine -- where it seems the cultivation of sheer
will or endurance is what gets one through.
The shame people feel at being depressed is horrible, and I am *not* saying
that it is good to humiliate "us" depressives. But I swear, a bit of pushing
or clucking in small amounts sometimes helps to push one on.
Don't know, just rambling. I guess what bothered me is that there was a faint
implication in the article that there is nothing we can do, and I don't believe
that.
All that being said . . .yes, I am tierd of my ex and his family treating this
as an indulgence. :)
Best
Rosena
