What I'm doing : Reading posts; drinking Californian "champagne
method" wine; listening to Ted Hawkin's "The Lost Ones" (I see what
you mean about an entrant to the saddest song contest); and
overhearing the sound of the video on London that my husband and
daughter have on downstairs that she got for her birthday or for
Christmas (they are four days apart)...I forget which.
By the way, my daughter is now an official teen. Watch out, world.

If you have more than a few hours up here (I assume you'll be staying
with us), you need to visit York. It's 1700 years older than the USA,
and was the Viking capital, as well as the English capital in the north,
Richard III was Duke of York, you know. It's a short train journey. It
might even interest a teenager. ;-)

I hadn't gotten as far as to think of where we might be staying if we
do a trip out of London. The group that is sponsoring our trip is
paying for a hotel room in London for the duration, which makes it
tempting to spend our nights there. My husband and I have talked about
taking a trip to York specifically, regardless of the already-paid
room, but we haven't decided. He and I have been to York before, but
that was pre-daughter, and we both really liked it. I'd love to show
it to The Kid.
We're still in the dark as to our itinerary...I'm pretty sure of the
beginning and end dates, but I don't know what kinds of things they
will schedule for us versus what breaks we may have. I've been told we
are supposed to hear more over the next month or so. I'll let you more
when I know.

York is a day trip from London, as is Leeds. When you've made your
itinerary, let me know. I can make London if you want.

Your daughter's almost exactly a year older than my younger son
(by 3 days). I think he's already a teen. I hope she goes
through it as gracefully as possible.

Thank you, Lisa. She had a rough fifth grade year (she's always been
precocious), but she seems to be weathering every year since better
and better.

My son also had a bad fifth grade, mostly due to being
bullied, which he'd hidden from us until it was making him
physically ill. This year's been better. He's also precocious,
combined with being very, probably overly, sensitive.
Hopefully, the regional middle school next year will bring a
fresh start, since he won't be confined with the same group of
kids who know how to push all his buttons for fun.
I remember the troubles you had with your daughter then. I'm
glad to hear she's doing better.
