in response to Dorothy Parker, my favorite has always been Ogden Nash.
i've never seen a purple cow
and i hope to never see one
but i can tell you this, my friend
i'd rather see than be one.
tell me, octopus, i begs
is those arms, or is they legs
i tell you this, o octopus
if i were you, i'd call me us.
in the sixth grade we learned a song about walking in the jungle and
being eaten by a lion. i learned several years ago the words were Nash.
there is also Edward Lear, but i like Nash better.

Nash is great, e.g.:
CATULUS
Ea questio catulus SIT
Denique ista felis FIT
Vocabula:
catulus: young animal esp. of dog or cat
denique: in the order of succession, at length, at last
questio --> quaestio: inquiry, judicial proceeding
ex libellus _ Ave Ogden _ (MCMLXXIII)
tr. James C. Gleason atque Brian N. Meyer
Remember this .sig? Hope w. is doing well.

shouldn't that be something like 'ista' or 'istaec' or 'illa',
rather than 'sit'?

That should be:

I tried to buy something from Bike Nashbar today and they didn't have
the tire in their ad in stock anymore. It sucks too, it would have been
thinner AND have a nice safety feature -- a reflective sidewall.

"The Purple Cow" was penned by Gelett Burgess and not by Ogden Nash.
And in doing some Googling, I found that Burgess followed it up with:
Ah yes, I wrote The Purple Cow,
I'm sorry now I wrote it;
But I can tell you, anyhow,
I'll kill you if you quote it!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gelett_Burgess
Burgess has always been one of my favorites. Here's another of his
that I've always liked:
I wish that my room had a floor!
I don't so much care for a door,
But this crawling around
Without touching the ground
Is getting to be quite a bore!
And finally, my top favorite:
There is little in afternoon tea
To appeal to a person like me
Polite conversation evokes the elation
A cow might enjoy in a tree.
