oh, and got stuck by a needle today |
I didn't need this. More testing, bleh!
Sometimes I don't want to know. I get blood on me regularly from other
things at work, you pull off a glove and then all of a sudden it starts
again, or lots of different senerios, gloves just happen to be off. I
wonder if these exposures are going to catch up with me eventually. One day
I won't be lucky.
Then today a dirty needle stick. My manager is soooo naive. She asked the
guy if he had anything I should be worried about, and of course what's the
answer he gives? No. She tells me that he says he doesn't have anything
and is young (40+) and healthy so have nothing to worry about.
Well........that age group is the age group that is of concern and he looked
like the type that liked to party on his time off. She's so stupidly naive
to believe people. Because of his word, I don't get prophilactic meds. I
do get the testing however.

That's truly insane, I'm shocked that there isn't a complete lockdown and
testing of the source of the stick immediately, what the hell Cindi?
I'm thinking of you a lot.

Well, it was busy at the time and the director of nursing said that we
should have stopped right then, tested this guy and reported it. I was
pissed at my manager who asked if he had anything contagious and he states
*no*. So when she talks to our director, the infectious disease doc, she's
explaining to him that this guy was low risk and doesn't have anything,
because he says he doesn't. So my director chooses for me that i don't need
any of the meds that could potentially prevent hep c, hep b and hiv. But
what the ***** do I know. People always tell the truth and everyone knows
their own hiv, hep b/c status. I'm glad they get to make that choice for
me, that I don't get to make my own choice of what I need, of what would
make me feel at ease. Then she goes on to talk about her own recent blood
exposure, excuse me, it was a fucking infant, now that in my community is
low risk, a 40 year old man who looks rough around the edges, that could be
anything, or nothing. I know of a girl who got stuck, was pregnant, nursing
and since this guy was low risk (60+), they didn't do anything the first
week, then when his tests came in as positive, turns out the married guy was
quite the womanizer, had aids and hep b. Meanwhile, she exposed her unborn
baby, her nursing baby and her spouse. She ended up on AZT was on it for
her entire pregnacy, had to quit nursing. It all could have been somewhat
avoided if they would have treated her immediately and she never would have
had those fears of exposing her spouse and her nursing baby and would have
been on meds from the get go. I think any needle stick the person stuck
should get the choice of meds, not the one deciding if the guy or girl looks
like an infected person or not.
I now have to try to get ahold of the guy and try to get him to come back
and and agree to testing........I get to call, I think my manager, or the
facility should call, instead, I get to make the call. I think it's all a
degrading experience.
Then, I get to have blood tests, serially for the next 6 months.
I've done it before. Last one, was an eighty something female and got
sprayed in the eyes with frank blood from the foley cath. I wasn't overly
worried about that one. Can't say I'm going to lose much sleep over this
one. I just wish I had a say, instead of their policies and what they
think.

Demand the meds. Then remind them that a preventative prescription is a
whole lot cheaper than the law suit you could file.

Excellent point. I should have. I don't know what the window is anymore
for taking the meds. It used to be within 6 hours of exposure, that was
AZT, now they're using different ones and I don't know what the window is.
Neither does the employee health nurse, director of nursing or my nursing
manager. Since none of them nor my medical director feel that it's
necessary, they won't check into it for me. For all I know and all they
will let me know, the window to take meds to prevent anything is past. The
guy is coming in, in the morning to get tested, if he shows up. So I'll get
those reports.
I always worry on tests like this, I've only had a few needle sticks
including this one. Everyday though I encounter other peoples blood on my
skin. Lots of reasons that a glove might not be on when all of a sudden to
save a IV site, in getting blood for a test or other things I get it on me.
I wash my hands, legs or whatever got exposed, as soon as possible, but I
wonder if it's ever going to catch up with me, and getting tested always
brings up those fears as well.

I've read this thread in a state of shock - surely, even the Pope could be
carrying 'something nasty' if he happens to have had an accidental exposure?
It doesn't matter who the patient is or what they say about their health,
if you get a blood-to-blood exposure you should get specialist advice and
treatment immediately.

Accidental exposure? Someone had to test those condoms to prove HIV came
through them.

This is insane. So why was Sci. Am. wondering (back in January,
not March) about the nursing shortage.

All I can say, this is insane. And its been that way for years.

Needle sticks happen, it's just the person stuck should get to choose for
treatment or not. My last job and exposure I was given the choice of
treatment or not, even though this patient was extremely low risk. I
declined due to the nature of it, but this one I would have liked to have
had the option.
We're all peons

so they are not testing him? that would be much more conclusive than his
