My wife that is. We went to the doctor, presumably to get the official

They did an ultrasound because Patti was having pain and tightness on the

uterus is just slightly tilted to the right, so it's putting extra pressure

shouldn't be a problem.
So now I have about seven months to convince her that Ceilidh is a much
better name than Amanda. I know she likes Amanda because of a soap
opera... but then I like Ceilidh because of the movie Local Hero.
Amanda Rose, to be exact, is the name she suggests. That sounds like a
porn star, doesn't it?. She said she would accept Amanda Ceilidh. Well
that just doesn't flow off the tongue. I don't care for the concept of
middle names anyway. You only need two - what you are called, and what
family you come from. The only purpose of middle names is to give mom an
extra word to say when she is really *****.

hee...this reminds me of that old bill cosby skit. the one where he says he
thought his name was "jesus christ" and his brother's name was "dammit" when
they were kids (or vice versa).
"JESUS CHRIST! GET IN THIS HOUSE RIGHT NOW, DAMMIT!"

"It was because of my father that from the ages of 7 to 15, I thought that
my name was Jesus Christ and my brother, Russell, thought that his name was
'Dammit.' 'Dammit, will you stop all that noise? Jesus Christ, sit down!'
One day, I'm out playing in the rain, and my father yelled, 'Dammit, will
you get back in here?' I said, 'Dad, I'm Jesus Christ.' " (Bill Cosby)

Hilarious, U2B. Big laugh! Smart- that Bill Cosby. Big laugh out of
Sortality's suggestion, too!
Four notes, Cyberdroog:
1) Congratulations
2) Congratulations
3) I am nearly 35. I have no children, by choice. Earlier in my life,
when I would have made so much worse a parent than I could be now, I
would not have envied you at all. I do, a little bit, now. Just
thinking of what you saw (and maybe even heard?) on that ultrasound
makes me feel a little warm inside, and my eyes widen in amazement.
Another heartbeat in there?! Waaaoooow.
4) I would not tell a man what to name his child. I do have some
thoughts on this issue, though. I hope you will not find my feedback
upsetting, or insulting, for I intend neither of these...
My thoughts on names for kids:
A) Had I a child, I would try to make certain the pronunciation of
their name would be phonetic, so that only the dense or illiterate
could screw it up. "Celidh" does not fall in this category, for
she will get the following: "Se-lid", "Se-leed". "Ke-lid",
"Ke-leed", "See-lid", and "See-leed", as well as the
combo-package (those who throw out two or more of these, hoping to hit
the right one). This feedback stems from personal experience. Upon
reading my last name, most readers pronounce it the way I like to
pronounce it, though quite a few do not I find it annoying having to
correct them, but have no choice, 'cause its my name, and the
mispronunciation bugs me.
B) Before naming my child, I would imagine that I was the following
ages: 6, 12, and 17, and in such mindsets, think of mean, or annoying
things I could do with the name I was considering for my child, to hurt
the named (cause kids can be mean). "Celidh" seems fairly safe in
this dept.
C) Any name with more than one syllable is subject to a shortened
nickname. Some names shorten all-too-easily to insulting derivatives.
"Celidh" seems pretty safe here, too.
Take Care, and Please Give My Congratulations To The Lady,
Christopher

FWIW, I gave my daughter an Irish middle name. That way, she'd carry
the name (which I thought, and still think, is a lovely one) but
wouldn't have to cringe when substitute teachers did roll call.
My goal, as a child, was to have my hand up before the sub slaughtered
my last name....

I've found odd names to be conversation starters. It's also disarming
since people tend to feel guilty if they mispronounce someone's name.

congrats to yuz
reckon it's kewl when the initial for the middle name is a vowel or when one
of the other initials are, and when the initials are put on school bags etc
you get a word that looks nice /smart. ACE would be a goody (maybe corny as
well..) but don't suppose your family name is an E one...

Congrats to you both. On the subject of names, while I'm not one to
give an opinion on the matter, I thought you might like to know that
"Amanda" is Latin for "she who is bound to be loved", which I at least
find lovely (the Romans used to say "nomen omen", that is, "the name is
an omen", so I take "Amanda" as being the wishful thinking of loving
parents).

I had already looked it up and made a note for Patti. Amanda = Deserving
of love. That really goes well with the porn star name... :)

that just doesn't flow off the tongue. I don't care for the concept of

family you come from. The only purpose of middle names is to give mom an
extra word to say when she is really *****.

Are you Scottish?

Not really. I've got some Scot in me, but I'm primarily German.

you must give your child as many names as you can so she/he will know when
you are mad.
you know for sure the babe is a girl?
aint it cool that you can hear the heart beat so soon!? there is a little
person inside there.
kinda freaky when you think about it.

| My wife that is. We went to the doctor, presumably to get the official
| blood test, but it seems they just take a woman's word for it now.

| They did an ultrasound because Patti was having pain and tightness on the

about
| eight weeks now. The pain, we were told, is nothing to worry about. Her

pressure
| on that side. It should level out once it grows. She has a fibroid on
the
| uterus, but the doctor said it's far enough away from the baby that it
| shouldn't be a problem.
|
| So now I have about seven months to convince her that Ceilidh is a much
| better name than Amanda. I know she likes Amanda because of a soap
| opera... but then I like Ceilidh because of the movie Local Hero.

We don't know what it is yet. But it does seem to have a tail.

Seeing the heart beat in real time kind of stunned me.
