Airport sit-down restaurant/bar, on par with maybe Chilis. We sat at
the bar, ordered one beer and an appetizer. I brought in my coffee with
me. Total tab = $14.62. Overpriced a bit, but it's an airport and
expected.
What would you tip? The bar tender dude was friendly and attentive.

I would tip three bucks.
Except I would tip five bucks if I brought in coffee from off site, because
I think the bartender could have made a stink and charged you for a coffee
or made you leave yours outside, especially if the cup was distinctive.

$3 = 20%
$5 = 34%
$5 seems awfully high. I thought it was supposed to be 15% if the
service was adequate. Are bartenders tipped differently than
waiters/waitresses? I don't go to bars.
Bringing the coffee in - I would think that this would be more accepted
at the airport, since it's a pretty chaotic environment to begin with, I
didn't know I was going to end up at that particular establishment, I
didn't even know it was there until we passed it. I'd think it would be
bad business if you made a big stink about people brining in stuff from
other places, esp. since there was a lot of competition in the immediate
area.
At the other airport, I ordered some beers from the bartender and picked
it up at the bar. Didn't seem like I was supposed to tip, but wombn
said I was supposed to tip him. I thought it was like getting something
from a take-out clerk, who you don't tip normally.

Yeah, they are different.
If the bartender spends some time talking with you, I figure he deserves a
nicer tip than someone who just carts food around. You are right about the
percentages. They are high, but I figure if you have a good time at an
airport that could be worth something.

I don't tip for take-out no matter what kind of establishment I leave. If I
have to carry my own stuff from the bar to my table-- no tip. No tip at McD
no matter how long I stay.

Total tab $14.62? I'd tip $2. Because it's an even number and a bit more
than 10%. Any thing more than 10% is always a nice tip. There is no point
in tipping huge just for a beer and appetizer! Esp. at airport prices! $2
is plenty. Just as it would be if you spent the same amount at Chili's.
Unless you get absolutely outstanding service, a tip between 10 and 15% is
the norm.
Just my 2 cents. :)

oh, and one more thing. i think it's NUTS to tip more simply because you
brought your own coffee in! you STILL ordered food and beer, and the guy
working behind the counter could care LESS that you brought in your own
coffee! we depressives have simply GOT to get over constantly worrying that
we might be "imposing" on someone. we are far too sensitive!! the
bartender and/or waiter simply doesn't care if you brought in your own
coffee. they are just paid workers the same as anyone else! don't give
them a "guilt offering" in an attempt to make yourself feel better. you
didn't break any laws and no one was harmed in any way. be comfortable with
an average tip, and QUIT SWEATING THE SMALL STUFF!

spend so much time fretting over things that simply don't matter!).

3 bucks would be all right, but 4 would be better. I think 20% is the standard
tip for good service now. Since you brought something in from outside, and
since your order is small, it's nice to throw in a little something extra.
IMO, if you pick up a drink from a bar you should still tip then a buck.

Naomi D.

Ugh. Hap said if he picks up something from the bar, he doesn't tip.
If you tip a bartender for ordering and taking a drink from the bar, do
you Naomi tip a buck a drink, or a percentage of the overall price? It
seems like picking a drink from a bar is like walking up to a McD's
counter and ordering your food. Or is there a difference?
What about tipping $3.25, or $3.50? Or should it be a round number,
i.e. either $3 or $4?

If I, Naomi, am getting a drink from a bar it is usually something like a
Cosmopolitan that they have to make specifically for me. It might be different
if they were just handing me a bottle of beer. I don't tip a percentage, just a
buck a drink or a "keep the change" kind of thing. (But if someone has the
nerve to say, "Do you want change?" then I do, just to be a pain in the *****.)

It

seems like picking a drink from a bar is like walking up to a McD's

To me there is. But I'm a tipper. I tip almost anywhere you can think of except
a fast-food place like McD's. Nobody ever tips in those places. Any place where
some people are tipping, I do too.
I don't know that the differences are all that logical.

What about tipping $3.25, or $3.50? Or should it be a round number,
i.e. either $3 or $4?

I don't know what the wisdom is on this. If I round up, it's just for my
convenience.

4 bucks.
Because of the outside coffee. The tip on that would have been another
buck.

Looks like the consesus is $3 for the service, and most are saying an
extra $1 for the coffee.
The thing I thought about the coffee is that it's not like we chose a
restaurant for a fancy meal and then brought in our own bottle of wine.
It was a random sitdown in a fast paced place, and I happened to have
coffee with me at the time, something to be expected in an airport.
Driving to a restaurant of your chosing, and taking a coffee with you is
qualitatively different than the airport scenario, so it seems.
It just seems excessive to tip $4 for a guy to hand us a plate of fried
cheese and a glass of beer. He was pleasant, but we didn't talk to him
or anything. It was a brief simple exchange. It's not that I'm cheap,
I just struggle to learn these social rules. If I overpay, I feel as
stupid as underpaying. My goal is blend in and look like I know what
I'm doing.

My goal is To Insure Proper Service aka t.i.p.s. --- which is the word
origin. I waitressed for a decade, loved it, made lotsa $ and would have been
totally fine with $3 for a quick, low-maintenance interaction. Bringing the
coffee at an airport is no big deal. imo. Just don't change a baby's diaper
at the table and I think I'd be fine. Since then, I've traveled a lot on
business and have learned the value of standing out with outstanding tipping.
Consider this scenario:
The bill is $14.62. I leave $20, say 'keep the change' and also forget my
sunglasses. The chances of the bartender bolting out the door after me and
kinda shrugging it off is what I'm paying for. The wear and tear on a
frequent traveler is enormous and I've found it to be worth it over the long
run. People who work for tips recognize a 'big tipper', believe me, and I get
what I pay for. But I think what you did was well in the range of acceptable.
And, as a former waitress, I appreciate your attention and sensitivity to the
parameters for the customer's role in the transaction.

The flip side is that sometimes if you treat people TOO well, they
actually don't respect you. I know it seems weird, but if you way
overdo something, you're going to: a.) stand out as weird, because
you're outside the norm, and b.) be viewed as a weak pushover trying to
buy people's respect by overdoing something.
e.g. the kid at the edge of a group who tries to buy his way into the
group by giving parties, letting them use his stuff, etc...ends up being
scene as a weak patsy and simply gets used. Or someone who gives car
rides to try to get invited to parties - he ends up being invited simply
because he's transportation. People like this aren't respected.
Now in this scenario, I don't know where that principle would kick in,
but I'm just describing a concept. Maybe if I had tipped the guy $10 or
$20, that would be weird, even if he willingly took the money.

I learned that one the hard way!
