I come across so few ogg files. I really wish it would take off as a
more popular format because it's pretty good, but alas mp3 has name
recognition and way too much momentum for ogg to ever catch up.

If you play the various formats back to back most people can tell the
difference. The problem is that as lossy compression becomes more common,
people won't even realize what they have lost.

When my kids were that age, they
convinced me to take them to see Adam
Ant. Oi. Fortunately, I had read a quote
of Grace Slick's (whose daughter was
about the same age as mine): "If you
like the same music as your kids,
there's something wrong and it will mess
them up. What they like should make you
wanna throw up." With that sage wisdom,
I had fun.
Later, I did like a lot of the punk
bands they liked (if I haven't got the
genre wrong). But I didn't tell them.
And I sure didn't like the volume levels.

my son told me the reason why he liked heavy-metal head-kicking music
was his way of enacting revenge on me because i forced him to listen to
Neil Diamond and Bette Midler whenever i got into serious housecleaning.
can't clean house if you don't have music with which to sing along.
couldn't use a broom with "Hot August Night" and "Divine Miss M"; still
my favorite housecleaning music.

Sound is analogue, so are LPs and ears. Any recording loses something,
but digital recording loses more, by being digital. CDs are a lossy
medium, but you need well trained hearing to tell the difference.
Keep music live, fluffs and all!
