Okay I'm back |
I suppose you expect me to read all your posts? Fat chance.
It was as bad as I could expect. Interesting though for other
reasons not related to family. I have discovered we have started
growing several varieties of pine in one planting.
Big commercial forest planting area where I went. It is amazing
how it is put into little rows by man and turned into beautiful
forest by nature. It is my favourite industry, growing trees.
Yeah yeah save the negative crap about pollution. They're working
on it.

glad to see you back, but sorry to hear the visit wasn't
better.
i love forests. we bought our original house because it was in
the middle of the woods. the house itself had not much to
offer (like no central heat), but the forest views made it
worth it.

Forests are the only way to remember how small we are without
being terrorized in the process. Love 'em.

Good to see you! Glad you survived reasonably intact.
There's a human-planted stand of red pine near me. I'm not sure why they're there, because it's not
part of a commercial operation. It feels a little eerie to me to walk through them - the unnatural
grid thing, and then there's the lack of underbrush. But it's generally pretty quiet in there, and
that's quite nice.

I didn't. But it's okay because I am now.

Not in New Zealand. Firstly, we are talking about a perfect
growing climate, wet, sunny and humid. Secondly, the forestry
here is pretty advanced stuff. After all it is our second major
export.
They deliberately prune all the outside firs two thirds up to
allow secondary growth to flourish. This is because it helps
control top soil erosion which is a problem in hilly wet country
dominated by trees. It also is part of a wildlife conservation
project because so much of NZ wildlife happens to be forest floor
dwellers and this practice makes a lot of suitable terrain for
wildlife.
Then there is the latest trick of mixed planting. This creates a
'contour' in the otherwise boring lines of firs which is pleasing
to the eye. I'm not sure of the reason for this mixed planting
but I'm gonna find out!
