My first dentures today. I haven't wanted to eat anything yet that would
test them.

The dentist is Greek - a citizen, not just by ancestry. I don't know any
jokes bout British dentists. OTOH £65 for five extractions (three roots,
two broken teeth) and a partial denture (six visits in all) beats the
USA for value, I think. (And taxes are only fourth on the list of things
a Briton pays for each year, unlike the USA where they top the list,
apparently.)

Well, then maybe it's an american thing...but the general impression is that
her majesty's peoples have some nasty teeth.

Maybe we do, by comparison to Americans, but then, we aren't enjoined to
floss twenty times a day out of fear of a dentist's bill.

We don't floss for fear of going to the dentist. We make appts with them to
go and have our teeth laser whitened. That's all cash money there, insurance
won't cover a pretty smile.

It's a common thing for depressives to have dental problems. I don't
know if it's direct, or just not taking care of ourselves.

I've had partial dentures for twenty years. Well worth paying for the best
you can get.
(I *must* get myself to the dentist soon).

I had a lot more teeth before the Big Bang. One of the known
side-effects of depression is tooth trouble - maybe we don't see the
point of looking after ourselves any more.

I hadn't heard of that connection before. Certainly self-neglect isn't
good for teeth, but I wonder if there's a more direct link? Something like
processing of minerals, perhaps, or a subtle change in pH?

Some antidepressants cause your mouth to become dry, thus not allowing
the teeth to have the cleansing action of saliva and this creates
tooth decay.

Terrific. Now you can chew again. I'll bet it took at least a
half-dozen jars of that "Gerber" stuff to make a man-sized meal! ;)

Having tried both, so far (no fixative) it was easier to eat apples
without the denture, but I'm working on it.
