I lived in a trashy area for awhile, and use to walk around all over, and
late at night, and only got an attempt at mugging once.
this really pathetically ragged and shaky looking guy, with extremely
bloodshot eyes, (he was probably sniffing paint or huffing gas), tried to
stop my friend and I as we walked by him. He just kinda shuffled in front
of us, and told us to give him our wallets. We just kinda glanced at each
other, then continued our conversation and walked around him on either side,
ignoring him as if we hadn't heard him. He didn't do a damn thing - just
stood there.
We kinda cracked up over it a little ways down the block.

Once I was mugged 1989, no fun, guy needed money I had some, end of story.
Then last year this homeless guy reached into my car to take my purse at a
gas station, I grabbed him and the purse we struggled and this other guy
beat the living crap out of him. He didn't get my purse.
Now I just stay home at night, my fear of the dark doesn't help either

What do you mean?
The park I was in crash mode or maybe it was a hypo mode, I was like 21 and
just sitting on a park bench enjoying the view of the lake. He hit me so
hard I didn't even know what was happening. I gave him my purse and
struggled to get free, I think he wanted more then money but didn't want to
really get into details.
The one a year ago, well I was getting gas and left my window open on my SUV
while pumping gas, he reached in to grab the purse (he was an older homeless
man) I grabbed him we struggled, a passerby saw the struggle, and popped the
old man, and beat the crap out of him while I stood there shaking my *****
off. The cops came, arrested both of them. The old man for trying to steel
my purse and the young guy for beating the old man the way he did it.

I'm more afraid of having a weapon and it'll get used against me. Though I
did take a self defense course after my first marriage and again about four
years ago. Though in real life, like when the guy was steeling my purse out
of my SUV, I didn't use anything I was taught, so it was a waste of time for
me. My mind freezes.

Handguns are the way of the future! Not really. I'm strangely fascinated
with guns and used to pack heat whereever I went. I came to the
reelization that schizophrenics shouldn't carry firearms. I keep my
guns in two locked safes and keep the firing pins in a lock box I've
hidden. Wouldn't want them to fall in the wrong hands.

I just realized that even owning guns would be a bad idea, so I sold the
couple of small caliber rifles I owned years ago.

I had to "sell" my guns to my wife because ex-felons can't legally own
guns in this state, but we're free to buy the ammunition!

Believe me. I've had the things pointed to my head more than once. I
know I'm too chicken to go out that way. I locked myself in the bathroom
once with one. It took a lot of police intervention to let go. I'm glad
I didn't do it now. I now respect my firearms for what they are, and
usually don't even think of them as a method for offing myself anymore.
I like to shoot up old computers and appliances in the desert when
feeling really shitty. Controlled destruction can be a good thing
sometimes.

Destruction is what I used to use them for. I didn't hunt I just busted

Someone attempted to mug me once ... and
then he recognized me. He sez, "Hey, you
used to work at the Paramount selling
tickets, right? You always let me in for
a kid's ticket price on Saturday
afternoons because I didn't have enough
money for the adult fare."
Then he walked me to my car and gave me
all kinds of good advice about not being
an easy target for muggers. It was kinda
sweet. Strange, but sweet.

The best was: Do not leave a restaurant

changed clothes or left at the same time

Oh yeah, for really real. I didn't
recognize him (it was at least 10 years
later) but I did remember selling
tickets to raggedy-looking 13-15 year
olds at the under-12 price. Get 'em off

considered it a kind of community service.

we spent time in Atlanta and would go walking through downtown at 2am

got home to find out that (at the time) Atlanta was #2 in murders.
