On typing |
I love my keyboard but the girl hates it, I'm only allowed to have a
mechanical switch keyboard in my den now.
This mandate just came down this morning after I woke around 6:00 and
did some typin' in the kitchen. Apparently "they can be heard *all over
the house*"
click, click, clickety, click, clique
My main keyboard also just turned 19 this month! But I have about 5 or
so and the oldest looks like it's going to be 23 come this summer.

Nope, click click.
The mechanical nature of these keyboards is what makes them feel so
wonderful but with that comes their acoustic joie de vivre.
IBM didn't skimp a bit on their hardware. That's why these keyboards are
so loved. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Model_M_Keyboard).
Type hard or go home.

For two decades, the IBM Model M Keyboard has been the defacto standard
human interface for force-feedback computing. Constructed with "buckling
spring" action and a chassis that doubles as a weapon

It's the same basic thing that was in the first IBM PCs. IBM patented
this particular keyboard "technology" in 1978.

You can search for Model M on ebay, there's still NOS (new old stock)
around and there's Unicomp (http://www.pckeyboard.com/) that bought the
whole shebang from IBM/Lexmark. They make new ones in all manner of
configurations.
Here's Dan's column about them: http://www.dansdata.com/ibmkeyboard.htm
He's a PC hardware geek out of Australia who's a hell of a lot of fun to
read.

if you can afford it get a notebook keyboard, you can write with a
stylus and it will translate into text.
or get an onscreen keyboard. when i suffered RSI and needed and
alternative to the mouse, i got a Wacom art pad with stylus but i had
the keyboard in a drawer and it was inconvenient working with both, i
got the onscreen keyboard so i didn't have to keep pulling out the
drawer. it's great for when you do a lot of editing.
