Object: One fucking problem to the next... now Insomnia!
As the a.s.d.* folks may know, I quit Effexor XR (225 mg per day) and
Risperdal (2 mg at bedtime) cold turkey a couple weeks ago because of
various reasons, one of them being the fact that I cannot afford them nor
can I afford any medical crap as it is hyperinflated pricing in the United
States.
Anyhoo, two weeks later after all the symptoms of mental health are gone, I
get a SLEEP DISORDER! *****! And the fact that I can't afford to go to some
doctor and pay $200 - $300 cash out of my pocket just so he can write a
script for Ambien which in itself I could probably afford just pisses me the
*****. Man I miss living in San Diego - at least there you could drive
20 minutes south to Tijuana, Mexico and get any prescription drug you want
without the need for a prescription / doctor's approval.
Anyways, does anyone know if there is a black market for sleeping pills like
the black market that exists for illegal drugs (i.e., marijuana & cocaine)?
Do drug dealers sell Ambien? If so, what is the going rate for say a
month's worth of pills?

The only black market I know of for prescription drugs is the internet.
Kind of ironic that one of the largest industries in the US is the drug
companies. I think this is why there's a prescription drug market on the
internet. The drug companies have enough power that they don't want any of
these illegal operations shut-down--there's too much money involved.
Too bad they can't get a patent on marijuana. Then, it would be all over
the internet and legal. (And, no, I've never used marijuana. I'm just
using it as an example.)

Since Effexor has a major discontinuation syndrome, most likely you're
reacting to that. The time frame is right- 2-3 weeks after coming off
it. Tapering down SLOWLY for a few months is what's usually done. Could
you possibly afford ONE visit to the prescriber (even if you have to pay
off the visit over time) to deal with the tapering?
I'm not sure about Risperadal's tapering process, but I do know that
it's most often used at those lower doses for people who have difficulty
sleeping- so that's probably a significant part of the difficulty too.
How is your sleep hygeine (no exercise for a few hours before bed, no
caffeine, no stimulating books/TV/etc right before bed/ getting out of
bed if you haven't fallen asleep for 1/2 to 3/4 hours after getting in
bed/regular bedtime every night/etc)?

This is all part of the same problem. After quitting a med that has a
documented side effect of sedation, your body is having a hard time
adjusting. Instead of self-medicating with a med that is not dr prescribed,
why not see a dr for something that will work? (Like we have been
recommending) That is, instead of doing something that may/may not help, but
has the possibility of legal problems on top of everything else?

Ambien is like candy to me.....does absolutely nothing. Why would you want
to spend money on it?
Trazodone is cheap and knocks you out if you take about 150mg.

Yes I've tried it all. Tylenol PM keeps me awake lol...Benadryl keeps me
awake...the only med that truly knocks me out on my a$$ is Trazodone or 4mg
of Xanax. I have a script for 0.5mg, but I try to "hoard" the Xanax for days
when I need "immediate" relief, like when the kids have gotten on my last
nerve LOL!
In the past I've been prescribed Ambien, Temazepam, Triazolam, Vistaril and
others for insomnia, but none of it helped at all. Actually I just
remembered Amitriptyline 50mg knocks me out like the Trazodone, and is
fairly cheap, too, but it's harder to wake up.

Now that I'm off my soapbox (momentarily) - How much caffeine are you
drinking? It can affect you for up to 14 hours (believe it or not) after you
drink it. If your body is not used to it, and if you are drinking it late
enough in the day, that may be contributing to the problem.
