One million English women |
That's how many play football here, apparently. Half of fifty million,
less those too old or too young, and it must be five to ten percent!
It's amazing what these TV commentators come out with.
England 3; Finland 2. Norway and Denmark outrank England, and will be
harder. Two more points will get them into the knockout round. Denmark
on Wednesday. I have my (French) beer chosen.

just be what I feel like saying right now, okay?

I'm not a soccer fan, but I did hear one commentator saying that it was
quite surprising the way the women socer players look so much like soccer
players when they are playing soccer. You know, running about, kicking the
ball, that sort of thing ... I wonder why the womens' game has suddenly
started to get so much air time here? (Couldn't possibly be because the
mens' teams want too much money for being on TV).

??? What did he expect women to look like when they are playing soccer?
Shrieking when the ball comes near them? Stopping to do their nails?

I'm sorry to say, that, although the rest of the world may have advanced
from the mid-twentieth century, football lagged behind in England. The
authorities have been unbelievably sexist, which doesn't encourage
commentators, who probably haven't seen a women's game before.
The Football League has only recently removed the ban on women playing
on League grounds, so this European competition is the first to be held
here. 39,000 people turned out to watch at the ground, which is good for
a men's club, and it was shown on a mainstream terrestrial TV channel.
Btw, I say 'mid-twentieth century', since in the nineteenth and early
twentieth centuries, women's football was a mass spectator sport, played
on 'men's' grounds. It's only just being allowed to become one again.
Who knows, maybe it'll be women's rugby next. One ex-England
international (male) said it was much more vicious than the men's game!
:)
Bbtw, a common rear-window sticker for rugby supporters is 'Give blood,
play rugby'.

Even so, that doesn't excuse the patronising remarks I heard. Even
football commentators have probably seen women before (if not actually playing
soccer) ...
It would be interesting to know why the Football Association were so
vehemently misogynist between the end of WWII and the start of this season.

I can't imagine such an attitude. Women aren't integrated into most
professional sports in America, but that is because of the basic fact that
they just can't compete with men in most things. So they have their own
leagues - some more popular than others.
Didn't these commentators see Bend it Like Beckham? Once you've seen
Paraminder Nagra running around in shorts, it's hard not to want to watch
women's sports.

Perhaps sports commentators are too low-brow to go to a Cinema.
