Do you like science fiction?
If so, you might like Shadowhunter by Will Baker.

as i recall, Dune by Frank Herbert features
huge sand worms that swallow up anything
on the surface, machinery included.
Thankfully, it was all in another planet system,
if not galaxy. I think it was possible to ride on
the back of these worms (a bit like a whale rider).

Yes. I think there's a bunch of those, maybe they would be good, too.

That's how they battle the bad guys, isn't it? It's been a long time, but
I think they use the giant worms to mount a cavalry into battle.

gosh
what a sight that would be
i do remember they had these 'thumper' machines to throw the worms off their
trail while they crossed worm habitated dessert regions. Or maybe that was
to summons them for battle..?

Both, I think, in different parts of the story.

ok
thanks for that
might get the movie out one of these days (the one with sting in it)
i read some of the story behind the making of that film and it was an
interesting saga in itself. It was basically released in a modified form to
hide the fact that it was not completed. Problems with production and budget
over-runs
possibly similar to earlier attempts at 'lord of the rings', in that
technology has only recently begun to allow decent renditions of epic
fantasy /sci-fi tales (with giant sand worms, etc)

well, that particular film (the one with sting in it) had really good
visual effects, for the time anyway - the worms are really impressive,
even for today, imho
(some of the models for the spaceships - which are overall fairly
scarce, as it is an "on-ground" story - are stunning, really
beautiful)
