One of the best books you've never read. |
"Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience" by Mihaly Csikszentmihaly
I bought this book when it first came out in 1990 and have read it about
once a year since then. Each time I read it, I get something new out of
it, including one bonus that I never expected.
When I was a student at Emory University, I had a part time job in a place
at a local strip mall. I happened to be reading the book during a break
when one of my regular customers saw me reading it.
"That's my brother, you know." she said. "He's a bigshot now," she
continued in a joking manner. "He's from Chicago but he just bought a big
ranch next door to Tom Brokaw. Mr. Big Shot!" She laughed.
We talked for a few minutes and she offered to mail my copy to him and get
it signed. She told him I was his biggest fan. He not only signed it, but
when he visited her in Atlanta, she invited me to dinner and I spent
several hours conversing with him. It was a very entertaining evening and
I found him to be a very bright man.
I have since graduated and gone on to bigger things in life, but I still
keep in touch with Mihaly and he still continues to inspire me. If you've
never read this book, I think you'll find it well worth your time.

That is a great book. I should pick it up again. I remember being completed
wowed by it when I read it a few years back.

I'll second this recommendation ... especially the reading it more than once
suggestion. Sounds like a great dinner in Atlanta, Shaolin.
