Object: only in Germany
it was 60F, the sun was shining, i decided to walk the two blocks to the
market to get eggs & milk instead of having Alu pick it up on his way
home. and i need all the vitamin D i can get.
so i got the eggs and milk and a wee bit more, got to the checkout,
total 41Eur and my EC card didn't work. couldn't use my debit card, not
enough money in the account. couldn't use my Mastercard because I never
have and don't know the PIN. Doubleshit.
of course, everybloody in the town is out shopping because the sun is
shining, all behind me in checkout, trying to be patient. the clerk
speaking to me in German, i'm listening in English. she tried the card
again. nada. i've shopped there every week for the past 4 years. what
did she do? she had me write my name on a sheet of paper, attached the
register receipt to it and said i could pay it the next time i came in.
i love Germany.

We have a little food market in my village and "Clark" of Clark's
General Store lets everybody in town run a tab - just like grocery
stores all used to do. His "credit check" is asking neighbors if you
live in town and making sure he's seen your face around.
It's convenient for my ambien inspired shopping/cooking sprees.

I had a supplier do this for me last week. I buy from them maybe once a
year, and the guy working there didn't know me. I showed up at 4:50 pm,
he couldn't work the cash register. I was desperate for wax, in the
middle of a floor job and ran out. He gave me a bucket and told me to
pay on Monday. Very cool.

when you go back, bring him a coffee or a coffee and donut or something.
i want to do something special for her when i return but i think she is
part of the family which owns the market. don't want to give flowers
because they sell them fresh, right behind her register. can't give her
special pastry because they sell it right in front of her register.
Lindt chocolates, to the left. wine, to the right.
