OT question: potassium? |
x-no-archive: yes
OK, I can't find an answer to this on Google.
I was throwing up all night Monday; either a bit of food poisoning or a 24-hour
bug (although I still feel crummy).
I always hear that when you are puking as much as that, you should replenish
your electrolyes, especially potassium. I was in the store, and I looked at
some potassium supplements. WTF?--the daily dose of them gives you only 3% of
the RDA. I look at this Vitamin C drink I like, and one dose is 6%. I looked at
all the sports-electrolyes drinks and they all have numbers like that.
Why is this? I know you can kill someone with a megadose of potassium but what
is the point of a supplement that gives you 3% or so?

I think the key they're getting at is to prevent dehydration. I believe
the reason they say to replenish the electrolytes is that those are
salts that retain fluids. Some sports equipment/running stores *might*
possibly carry those electrolyte salts in tablet form (for extreme cases
like heat stroke). But if it were me, I would just keep up the fluid
intake.
But--this is an afterthought--I don't know if there is a crucial
difference between how much "K" a woman's or a man's body requires. I
don't know if the body really needs more than what it gets from your
fruit juices or supplements.
Man, looks like I wasn't much help after all. :( But I still think the
key is keeping up on the water and juices.

Eat a banana.
He is right. eat a banana. High pottasium content. it is one of those
'salts' that you need to counteract being dehydrated and to correct your
electrolyte balance. Riper ones are easier to digest, too.

Soften them in the microwave (skin off!) (about 2 minutes for two moderate
bananas in my microwave) - add double cream and you've got a treat :)) (or
whizz up to make a 'smoothie').

Yeah, I think you're right.
I discovered that V8 juice has an incredible amount of potassium-- along with a
lot of sodium, which you also need to replace when you have the stomach flu.
I've been drinking that and it seems to be helping.

Naomi, for what its worth (which may not be very much) I wouldnt be too
concerned about potassium after throwing up a lot. People do that all the
time and are just fine. The human body knows how to take care of itself,
except when it bungles a serious illness.

I know, it would seem that way, but sometimes when I start throwing up it gets
into a vicious cycle and I keep throwing up and getting more dehydrated and
weaker and weaker. Drinking water doesn't help; I throw that up too. A few
years ago someone told me to drink something with a lot of electrolyes, and
even the little bit I could hold down long enough to absorb would help me
retain water and feel better. It seems like it could be psychological it does
seem like it helps.

Funny you brought this up: I was recently looking into K supplements myself due
to leg cramps from biking. I too was surprised that the supplements were a
measly 3%.
My buddies explained that potassium is dangerous if over-ingested, and
therefore available only by prescription. Bananas are much cheaper and
effective. Almonds are also a pretty good source.
Of course, the other posts already covered all this.....! Glad you're feeling
better!

Thanks! I'm amazed at how much potassium V8 contains too. It comes in a
low-sodium version, if that's an issue. What's weird is how sort of random the
list of high-potassium foods seems to be.
Part of what got me on this kick, besides feeling bad, was that a family member
of mine was just in the hospital for a potassium deficiency, apparently from
exercizing, drinking a lot of water and not replacing electrolyes.
Nice to see you.

I take 7,500 mg of potassium (as potassium chloride) daily--$50.00 a month!
My system just doesn't absorb potassium. On the lighter side, you should see
the look on the pharmacist's face, when I get my prescription filled. They
always double or triple check it, because it's such a high dose.
I hope you feel better soon.
